Wow I don't get it, the Warring State and Qin and Legalism stuff is actually pretty good and accurate, yet the rest is so far off the mark it's like as if the article is written by two different people.

Perhaps this guy only has interest in Chinese history and doesn't normally give a damn about contemporary Chinese stuff but thought for a change he could use his historical knowledge to make a point about today?

These are the usual western "intellectuals" trying to decipher China from the outside. As you can see they are failing lol

It seems overall trust in the government have increased slightly. All these people who were caught up in the moment and were suspecting that government was trying to cover something up saw instead the government was actually trying to protect the privacy of the family.

Now you force the government to reveal the security footage and we see the last few minutes of this young man's life. After this some people have done some soul searching and realised they didn't actually care if someone ate one bowl of rice jelly or two, but were just crowding around watching him slice open his stomach. Well now you have your answer but he's dead.

It's also woken up a lot of people on just how closely foreign agents might be operating around them and the dangers of coloured revolution. The people's level of alertness regrading security have also increased.

A lot seem to struggle with a value system that's legitimately different. Rather than just admit they don't like said system, they try to justify their dislike through "analysis".

I shit you now, i once had an australian white guy who did a few months in China teaching english and fancied himself a China Expert; i allowed him to try to regale me about how (then) President Hu Jintao couldn't do xyz because of "face" before shooting him down.

The reason why the Anglo intelligence/espionage/colour revolution attempts in China are shit is because their "China Watchers" are shit. The only espionage/intelligence/colour revolution ops that the MSS should be wary of are the ones coming from taiwan and/or HK- the ones who are more in tune with the zeitgeist of Chinese society.

From what I've seen, the whole BS story evolved around how the chem teacher off this kid so his kid can get an overseas study allotment.

Seriously? With all the COVID and anti-Asian crime going around do you really think people would kill for a foreign study slot? It would be a far fetch even back in 1985.

Come to find out the Chem teacher's kid are not even in the same grade as the suicide victim, so there was no potential slot issue.

Well, I wouldn't blame them for their shortcomings. After all, China is a huge mystery. The problem with understanding China, is that Western intellectuals are heavily influenced by Chinese intellectual (Mainland, Taiwan, HK and Overseas) who produced the primary sources. But Chinese intellectuals themselves are heavily biased as a result of their social placements in Chinese society the Chinese culture throughout history.

Chinese intellectuals focus to much on pre-Qin, Han, Song and Ming. They don't nearly enough attention to Northern and Southern Dynasties, Tang dynasty, Yuan and Qing Dynasty as well as the other major players like the non-Han minority ethnicities such as Xianbei, Khitan, Jurchen, Tibetans, Turks, Tungusic-mongolic people, etc.

In fact, I would say that the Northern and Southern dynasties is the period that really made what China is today.
