Discipline around low effort posts or poorly sourced posts

I'm sure all the nominated & self-nominated members are great. I haven't had much interaction with many here yet. I'll just say that having contrary opinions on panels avoids 'echo chambers.' Yes, it can cause some problems, but the alternative can lead to decadence sometimes.

I think any potential moderators should put their name forwards in a public way or be vetted for consideration of moderator-ship in a public way at least.

... also, they should fight to the death

That's not how moderation should work. Mods aren't debaters with louder voices; mods should have 2 modes: 1 in which they debate their opinions as equals to other members, and a second where they must shed their opinions to enforce the rules impartially. Therefore, mods shouldn't be chosen based on balancing other mod's political opinions but they should be chosen for their ability to enter themselves into an impartial moderator mode only for keeping the rules and integrity of the forum and never for imposing their opinions.

Bltizo makes some good points about the necessary qualities of a moderator.

In that spirit I think that by78 would be a very good choice, not least because he/she has been active in this thread considering ways to improve the forum. Not to criticise the other users, but I think that shows initiative and a desire to make things better. It also looks like by78 focuses entirely on the premier threads and doesn't get sidetracked with political arguments.

As for the others, I don't know how many new moderators the forum might get, but I agree that latenlazy should also be capable of doing a great job.

Finally, I don't know if Webby and the current mods might like a part-time mod just to cover some of the minor threads like in the Members Club and World Strategic Defence area, but ObiWanRussell has been here much longer than I have, and he's always been calm and pleasant from memory. If there's less need for the main moderators to police threads with light traffic it could also make their jobs easier.

Since everyone's throwing names into a hat, I'd like to nominate myself and tell you exactly what you can expect with me as a mod: I will wage a jihad to turn Sino Defence Forum into SINO Defence Forum. My first act will be to ban all of tidalwave's alts (if I get anyone who isn't, tough skittles, it's casualties of war) and lock out any new members until I'm sure that psycho has given up and gone - that alone will solve half the problems here. Next up will be banning everyone on my ignore list, which will be great because they won't only be gone for me, but for everyone else as well. They're on there because they deserve to be and you, dear reader, will notice the marked increase in quality once they're gone just as I have.

Now, you might think I'll arbitrarily ban everyone with a pro-Western opinion - nothing could be further from the truth. I'll ban the pro-Western trolls, especially those passive-aggressive little whiners who leave their road apples strewn about the various threads and don't have the courage to stand up and defend their warped opinions against serious challengers. They know who they are, and with me as a mod they're right out. They'd be wise to keep themselves to their F-35 thread - although Heaven knows what something like that is doing here, perhaps that needs to be gone as well...

What's my experience, you might ask? Why, moderating r/Sino on Reddit, of course! You might think it's a highly nationalistic and aggressively chauvinistic pro-China echo chamber, and you'd be absolutely right - but think about what it takes to moderate such a sub in the middle of one of the most disgustingly pro-American cesspits on the internet. We've withstood brigade after brigade after subreddit ban wave and still going strong.

Exactly. And we have seen the results of that in recent months, when certain member was made a mod. Although he contribute greatly, and mostly against the grain. He was a valued member.

But as he became a mod. This forum was hell to live with. I for one stay away until everything kicked off, and the rest is history. So we had better select mods carefully.

There are certain members here would never be suitable to be a mod. I for one (It's not a threat. Heaven for bud little old me making threats. I'm just stating the fact) would not feel comfortable if this member was ever made a mod.

Lastly, I think to be a mod, you need to be quite senior in the rankings. I know it doesn't say much. But it's the best we've got. It does indicate one has repeatedly busted this pages and therefore contributed to It's contents and traffic flow. And must have the forums interest to heart.

I will only throw my opinion out there -- that I think any potential moderators should put their name forwards in a public way or be vetted for consideration of moderator-ship in a public way at least.

The last time that a moderator was made one without the public knowledge of the community, it was... messy.

I will put my name forward to be considered. Thank you.

That guy has already been banned so there shouldn’t be an issue for now. However as long as the tensions remain in Ladakh expect more people like him to show up here.
Does SDF have IP-banning capabilities like Discord has? That could be a way to stop the alt account ban circumvention problem.
