CV-18 Fujian/003 CATOBAR carrier thread

Greater capability is to launch all types of aircraft (fighter, bomber, recce, AEW, tanker, etc.) from all take-off-positions at their maximum load.

And a CATOBAR-carrier on a Liaoning-type hull with a flat bow can have two catapults (may be even three, if on the starboard side remains enough length on a than shorter flat bow). Not CV 16 and Type 001A, they can have only one catapult on the angled deck.

I see. When you said Liaoning'esque I presume you meant CV17. A full deck carrier with 3 or even 4 cats would not be refered to as Liaoning-like LOL

In front of the forward elevator is not enough length for a starboard bow catapult. So I think a CATOBAR-Liaoning would have two cats, one on the port bow and one waist cat.

On a 20 meters longer hull a 3- or 4-cat-layout would fit.
In front of the forward elevator looks to be about 1/3 the length of Liaoning's 304m length so I don't know what makes you say this is inadequate for a cat. The 36 ton capacity C-13-1/2 steam cats on the Nimitz class are 99m length, while the 35 ton capacity C-13 steam cats on the Forrestal, Midway, and Enterprise were only 81m in length. There is simply no way an 81m length cat cannot fit in front of the forward elevator on a Liaoning-type carrier.

How sure are you that this new design is based on the Y-7 airframe? An AEW/C aircraft based on the Y-7 would be very large (compared to the E-2). Maybe a scaled-down version, or even a completely different aircraft.

possibly a scale down version like you said but I'm quite sure it would be based off the Y-7 platform especially the Y-7J model.
I doubt it would be a completely different aircraft though.

Whatever it is I'm pretty sure it'll have the usual rotordome and props.
It wouldn't be a gulfstream G550 based AEW that's for sure!

The Y-7 is 24,2m long and the C-2 Greyhound is 17,3m long. They will need to truncate the Y-7 to about 2/3 of its current length or they will have to build a new plane from scratch. It shouldn't be too difficult to develop a new plane like that.

Y-7 is a land based transport aircraft. To make an aircraft fit for this function it must be easier to start from a clear computer screen and not try to use any part of Y-7. There are the size, Y-7 is a bit large, there is the salty atmosphere at sea, there is the need to cater for a much higher vertical velocity at touch down - 6 rather than 3 m/sec, there is the attachment of the rotodome.

If that's the case they best hurry up! As far as I know there is nothing in the works about a totally brand new purpose built carrier AEW aircraft and something like this usually wouldn't be shrouded in super secrecy even by Chinese standards.

Why? A J15 is 22m long and much more difficult to launch and recover There is nothing which prevents a 24m turboprop from flying or landing on a carrier that's supposedly 70-80k tons. As long as the wings etc folds and fit inside a hanger that's all that matters.
They can resize it but no need to go to 2/3. Shave off 2 meters, shorten the wingspan and tail and we're good to go.

Or you could wait a few years and skip a Hawkeye-style aircraft in favour of an unmanned solution.
