As I noted in another thread where an earlier version of this image was posted, you can see they have ceased letting water into the future basin and have built a cofferdam in front of the old pump house - which suggests that it will be demolished. We can also see the outline of the basin emerging near where the new module assembly area is (it looks like the new pump house/sluice gate will remain in place - at least for now). In an accompanying image you can just see the dredger still active outside the cofferdams.

On which picture can you see the cofferdam?
I checked back many of them but I can't see it.

That basin can be good drydock to build four carrier at the same time.

That seems closer to CV-17 numbers.

At 80 000+ tons, it’s the size of Kitty Hawk, with far more efficient systems on board. That thing had up to 90 aircraft total. Granted, some of the fighters were smaller F/A-18s and only some of the airwing was J-15 sized F-14s.

A more realistic estimate would be 50 fixed wing + a dozen rotary + a handful of propeller craft.

You're comparing wartime surge to normal operating conditions. Even a Nimitz class very seldom has 90 + airframes embarked. typically around 70. and like you said a J-15 is larger than an FA-18. Remember, the Z18 is also much larger than the Seahawks. I would guesstimate it'll probably hover around 56-60.

President Donald Trump told U.S. troops stationed in Japan he plans to order traditional steam powered catapults aboard American warships instead of newer electromagnetic systems that he said may not work as well during wartime.

Trump polled the sailors and Marines on the USS Wasp on steam versus electric catapults Tuesday during a visit to the the Yokosuka naval base south of Tokyo, the biggest overseas U.S. naval installation.



The tour came at the end of the president’s four-day state visit to Japan, a key military ally. The troops’ cheers were audibly larger for steam catapults -- used to launch aircraft off navy ships -- and Trump took note.

“We’re spending all that money on electric and nobody knows what it’s going to be like in bad conditions," he said. "So I think I’m going to put an order -- when we build a new aircraft carrier, we’re going to use steam."

It fits into the puzzle. Maybe 2 years ago, and Chinese admiral Ma Weiming claimed that China's new EMALS is superior to the American one on the Ford and it was initially met with ridicule by most media and some members. Then, months later, China brought out its first ship-mounted rail-gun, showing us for the first time Chinese advances in electromagnetics beyond American capabilities. And now, it's more clear that America's EMALS system has many problems (that Chinese intelligence may have known) and was simply mounted onto a carrier before it was ready (whereas China had a better system designed before the rest of the ship was ready).

This is the third time that Trump touched the topic of US super carrier program since he moved into the White House in 2017. The significance of this news is that it is a clear indication that the US Navy's newest catapult toy hasn't worked properly after tons of money has been spent to improve it. It looks like Trump is losing his patience to the EMALS that he thought was a waste from the beginning. This news may also confirm Gen. Ma Weiming's claim that US's EMALS is decades behind Chinese EMALS.

I am holding my breath to watch if Trump really goes that far to order the EMALS removed from the Ford. Well, anything can happen now when the words "Wrong" and "Overhaul" are used by a guy whose mental stability is always a hot topic of the media.

Trump is looking for ways to reduce costs but, I can't see the USN going back. They're too far into the carrier program for such a drastic change.

I agree with President Trump on EMALS. To me steam catapults are a tried and true system that works. I do not think EMALS will be removed from Ford or Kennedy.

I was hoping the video wasn't CGI. There's got to be footage of them using their catapults in that testing center.
