In China it is called 003, so we call it 003, too.

@Jeff Head ... sorry to interfere once again, but given that we are here at the SDF probably the final forum, which still uses the old - and by most members and especially Chinese forums - definitely wrong designation for both this and the second carrier, I want to call to change this.

It was once your decision and we accepted it, but now it's time to accept the facts.

This - the first CATOBAR carrier currently under construction is the Type 003 or at least carrier 003 and the first indigenous one from Dalian is the Type 002 or at least 002 carrier. No-one reliable calls it 001A.

Best and respectfully,
Deino

In my count:
Liaoning = Type 001 = Carrier 001- which is official
the so called Shandong = Type 001 A = Carrier 002 - like most published
the next Type = Type 002 = Carrier 003 (and may be Carrier 004),
so I will call it Type 002 and difference it by Type 002 S(hanghai) and Type 002 D(alian)

let me repeat what I put forward as an alternative Jul 7, 2018
I can imagine some China members may dislike reading about quote unquote correct name!

Remember it's not original plan to build them simultaneously. It became like this because of the PK so one got delayed.
In orther words, you would have seen one much earlier not for the PK.
But we did receive a rumor a month or two ago that the carrier program had been accelerated, and in the last few days we were told that the module under discussion appeared a month, or a month and a half, sooner than expected.

Anyway, please: what is "the PK"?

I don't think we should be too fixated on the "type" of carrier under development currently by China. What we do know, beyond any doubt however, is that the first fully Chinese built carrier, the one we called the 001A, is being referred to by the Chinese authorities as "002", whether as "type 002" or just "carrier 002", we couldn't be 100% sure, but 002 nonetheless.

So, under such a situation, where the designation of an "002" being already OFFICIALLY reserved for the first fully Chinese built carrier, for us then to still insist on calling the third (and second fully Chinese built) carrier as a "Type 002", would make further discussions to be unnecessarily convoluted, especially since a good majority of other respectable discussion platforms out there are already using the designation of "003".
