I wonder why they cannot simply lead with photo releases of this quality first. Given state media should be relatively coordinated, I imagine there must be a way for the initial official imagery release to lead with higher resolution versions first.

The lower resolution images you're referring to were all screenshots from the video, I believe. They released the video first, then these high res images.

Yes, that is what I am referring to.

Essentially, that they should have the ability to post the highest quality imagery available to begin with (after all, even a video can be uploaded first, have its 4K version ready to go, and timed to release at a given moment), in a more coordinated way so the defining, leading visual is one of a higher quality visual than something pixellated and fuzzy.

Alternatively, if they cannot be bothered releasing a high quality video first, then releasing high quality still images instead is also viable.

This is more basic media/PR competency than anything.

Xi is more important than the ship. If you release all these high quality pictures about the ship first (or at the same time) without Xi, you would steal thunder from him.

The videos were high quality I believe. And they were actually about Xi just as much as they were about the ship.

I don't think so. Even in the videos where the ship took up a small fraction of the video length (7-8 seconds out of 50+ seconds), it should have been within their capabilities to make all of the footage (not just the ship, but of the overall commissioning ceremony, including Xi) have a higher quality as the first release.

I suspect there just isn't much of an overlap between talented media/PR individuals, and individuals who understand military matters, while also being able to follow state media goals.
That is to say, it's just a case of general incompetence rather than deliberate 3D chess

Anyway, I digress. This will be my last comment on the matter -- at this point state media incompetence is less of a frustration than an amusing feature of PLA watching, to tick off on the proverbial bingo list for any new development
