mmm, not sure I credit the idea of a correlation between ship name and basing/deployment area, unless such a connection has previously been established in Chinese practice?

you absolutely have a right to doubt it, no probs ...... but I am with Deino for this one

To admit IMO unlikely. In order to set a sign for the greater imprtance of the SCS more regular deployments of PLAAF and PLANAF regiments to the alreay established islands would make much more sense. Even more the name Shandong - if indeed correct - is IMO a clear hint that it will also be based in the North. If the SCS-fleet would have been its future assignment, then Hainan or any of the Southern Provinces would be a better name ...

Just my 2 Cents.

Not really ! By now, the Liaoning is NOT assigned to the NSF but to the PLAN HQ as a training vessel. even if based there, so if the Shandong will be assigned to this fleet it would not be a second carrier.

One training carrier for north fleet (#16 Liaoning) based at Guzhenkou
One training carrier for south fleet (#17 Shandong) based at Sanya
both also to forward defending of SSN-Bases

You point good but for name matters i see a 052D Chengdu based with NSF so if you consider names maybe logic but no sure, i can' t check all classes LOL

For strategic reasons i am for Sanya as the first was initialy pressed it is the way for pass between Chna - Philippines less defended ofc Philippines have nothing ! and the door for Indian Ocean.

The Liaoning is not a training carrier it's obvious now.

It is and will remain so for a long time being ... and if not - heaven's sake it won't happen - a true crises will arise.

YES, officially the CV-16 can be used in ops, but their main task is for a long future to train as many pilots, crews and sailors on carrier operations ... as such it is and will remain a training vessel.

Actually there's still lacking official confirmation on the name for CV-17, however because the carrier-borne assets training facility is in that region, it'd therefore make logistical sense to station those 2 carriers there.

Liaoning primary role as a training carrier, is something the PLAN stressed from the beginning, and makes perfect sense when they've to build up a cadre of carrier-qualified personnel from the ground up. can be pressed into combat role if need be, but serves as training carrier for the most part of her service life, that's the reality of things and the Chinese already accepted that fact.
