Hello everyone, this is my firs post here!

this might be an ignorant question but how much space does a J-15 take up vs a Mig-29 vs. a naval F-18?
I'm not making a conflict comparison. I'm literally asking what the size difference is.

Few years ago I did a lot of geometrical calculations on aircraft handling on carriers. Su-33/J-15 might be bigger than lets say F-18 and MiG-29, but its folding capabilities are magnificent and much better than the rest of the modern aircraft in the world (including F-35). Having said that, I don't see any advantages for smaller aircraft over J-15.

We have never even seen 16 J-15's on the Liaoning any given time. What makes you think they are already fielding 24 J-15's?

At this point there are at least 24 confirmed/photographed J-15s. Numbers are from 100 to 123. Also several more are seen at testing... Originally, carrier was designed to carry 24 Su-33 and several helicopters.

For two tons maximum payload, two YJ-83 assuming 715kg (weight of the sea launched YJ-83) would mean over 1400kg, which gives you over 500kg for AA missiles. PL-8 weighs only 115kg. That's more than enough for two PL-8s.

You could also alternatively use three YJ-91 (600kg) or four C-705 (320kg).

This is more than enough for a "small" foe. Otherwise you are better off launching antiship missiles en masse in salvoes from surface ships like the Type 052D and 055. These ships can launch far more devastating YJ-18 or maybe YJ-12 missiles.
2 PL-8s makes for a poor self defense capability, if the J-15 in question has escort fighters. And with ski jump carriers the margin of error is higher than a catapult,so even if the numbers are permissible, it will be highly unlikely that the J-15 would be armed to its limits as to not tax its engines. 2 YJ-83s and 4x short range AAMs will be pushing the J-15 to its limits on the Liaoning.
Smaller missiles are of course an alternative, but smaller missiles come with smaller range and capabilities. And with even the smallest ships having some form of layered defense bar the corvettes. Expecting 2 missiles to do the job is highly optimistic, and diverting more J-15s to a strike role would sap the already small number of fighters to begin with.Which is another problem the Liaoning has.
The benefit of air launched salvoes is that unlike surface ships, fighters can close the distance no matter how far the ship is. Plus the trade off is much lower than risking a billion dollar destroyer.

Magazine scan via LKj86. So total is 16 J15 that they can park on the deck with runway clear to land

No, 15 would the maximum according to this scheme. The port side bow launch position would definitely not be usable during a trap. Actually the maximum may be even less than that, possibly 13. The last port-side red J-15 and the last starboard-side red J-15 may have to be deleted so that the ones just in front of them can be turned more vertically to keep them further away from the landing strip.

It is official the test is a success
Chinese naval group CEO CSIC says in an internal meeting that the second Chinese aircraft carrier has passed the structural, buoyancy, stability and sealing tests at the first exit to the sea, as well as the locally designed propulsion system.

Thank you for the warm welcome guys...

My addition to the picture of the deck is the 2 most common options in the hangar (22 airplanes each, 8-10 hellos):

It is possible to get 4-5 more jets there but that configuration makes handling almost impossible.

Lets say that 28-32 jets (hangar + deck) is pretty realistic thing.
