Now give it a back blate and leave it as it is haha.
Doesnt need to get bigger.

Im lovin it
Unfortunately, the final island is going to end about 3x as big as that section.

I don't see why they couldn't launch this thing as soon as the rest of the island is lifted into place and the flight deck holes are filled. Maybe in January before the Chinese New Year? :D

Once the island is in place they have to let it sort of settle a bit to ensure the fitting, testing of structural integrity and other sub parts. It's like putting a steel column and beams onto a concrete foundation. The whole weight of the structure has to get settled a bit before moving onto the next phase of construction.

So, the island on CV-17 might not be a lot smaller than the one on CV-16 .... hmmmm a bit disappointing

I think 001As island was always going to be only a little smaller than Liaoning's, if that at all, so I think it is to be expected.

I didn't know that ... I thought it was widely expected the island would be significantly smaller ... and really there is no reason the island to be that big, it was designed ~30 years ago anyway

Nah, the rumours were always talking about a ship that was basically like Liaoning, and there were a few mentions of the island by big shrimps over the years and the consensus was basically "expect no major changes".

Remember, 001A is meant to be the low risk, earlier-to-arrive option. I'm sure they could have substantially reduced the island if they really felt the need, but that would've made it a little more costly, a little more risky, and more importantly would've caused delays in time which were probably judged as not worth it.

The fact that they've obviously redesigned the island has already exceeded my own expectations; a year or so back I would've been expecting an identical island to Liaoning.

The island is comparable to that of CV-16:

The additional deck level/pri-fly level really adds to the sense of height on this island compared to Liaoning.

Anyway, in terms of overall island footprint size, I expect it will at most be 20% smaller than Liaoning's island, but probably more like 10% smaller if that at all.
