... how do you know it is "possible" to install the internal machinery that would be needed to operate catapults?
I know, that it had been done several times in the past even with smaler ships. I don't know, whether it is possible for a Kuznetsov-type carrier.

Several times? How many, exactly? And which of these ships were later used as actual operational fighting ships instead of demonstrators? Every cubic meter of a carrier is used for something, meaning if you were to install a couple giant steam generators and all the piping required to send steam to a cat, and the cats themselves into the 03-deck, you give up that much more fighting capability. Same thing for the cabling and giant alternators needed to power an EM cat.

You had some time ago listed the example of the HMS Perseus having been retrofitted with steam cats, but that ship had its landing capability completely ruined by the single cat which was installed onto (not into) the flight deck. The Perseus had been turned into a demonstrator ship that was totally incapable of acting as an actual warship. The USN ships that were subsequently retrofitted with steam cats already had hydraulic cats installed and so catapult machinery was already allocated the internal space from the beginning.

Guys we have a separate thread for CV-16 Liaoning. We are getting some pretty detailed discussion here specifically about her.

Please take those discussions to the CV-16, Liaoning Thread.

This thread is for CV-17 Carrier 001A Program.

Thanks.

looks like she's coming along nicely! Things should progress quickly from now. They are definitely near the 10 yr line. Put the island on, do the decking and run a lil bit more wires, plumbing, vents, install subsystems etc should be good to go and then just testing left afterward.
After the island is put on you don't really need to move much more big bulky sections with the gantry.

I have to say I'm impressed with the speed of the PLAN's naval buildup.
