I'm not saying anyone is wrong here-- we can refer to the Type 002 as 'CV-18' and everyone will still understand what's being referred to. However, strictly speaking, it should be referred to as 'Ship Number 18' or only '18', assuming that 002 will receive pennant number 18.

For clarification, 'Type 002' refers to the class/design of ship, while '18' (or CV-18 if you're more comfortable with that) refers to a specific ship. There may be more than one Type 002, which may well end up with pennant number 19.
Until yesterday 001A (becoming CV-17) was a modified Liaoning to be build in Dalian and 002 (becoming CV-18) was a larger design similar to Uljanowsk expected to be build in

. We thought, that we got an idea of the optimized PriFly for this larger aircraft carrier at Wuhan.

Now we have an other variant with more decksspace and a smaler island of Liaoning, may be without ski jump. If we name it CV-18, it will be confusing. Better to name it "001B".

And as I know the Chinese people, after CV-16 and CV-17, they will name it CV-61 and CV-71. They don't count numbers, they play with numbers.

A hull classification where the designated ship type precedes the number (e.g. CVN-68, DDG-67) is US Navy practice. The PLAN follows a hull classification system similar to the Royal Navy's in WW2, with only a number for each ship.

Understood.

But after WWII the Royal Navy has adopted a classification system (as have most western nations). it's is not the same as the US, but it does have its own logic (in most areas):

R - Aircraft carriers (For example, the new HMS Queen Elizabeth will be R08)
L - Amphibious vessels (dock or helicopter platform...doesn't matter)
D - Destroyer
F - Frigate
P - Patrol
M - Mine (countermeasures, sweeping, laying)
H- survey vessels of all types
S - Submarines of all types

The US gets more specific:

CVN - Nuclear fleet aircraft carrier
CV - Fleet aircraft carrier
CG - Guided missile Cruiser
DDG - Guided missiles Destroyer
FFG - Guided missile Frigate
FF - Fast frigate
LCS - Littoral Combat ship
P - Patrol vessels
LHD - Landing Helicopter Dock (W/well deck)
LHA - Landing Helicopter Aircraft(W or WO/Well deck)
LPD - Landing Platform Dock
LSD - Landing Ship dock
ESD - Expeditionary Transport Dock (Formerly MLP - Mobile Landing Platform)
ESB - Expeditionary Mobile Base (Formerly AFSB - Afloat Forward Staging Base)
EPF - Expeditionary Fast Transport (Formerly JHSV - Jont High speed VEssel))
MCM- Mine countermeasures
SSN - Nuclear attack submarine
SSGN - Nuclear Guided Missile Submarine
SSBN - Nuclear Ballistic Missile submarine

Nobody is being "confused" by the designation CV-18. It refers to China's third carrier, whether or not it is to be considered the same class as Liaoning/CV-17, or another class. Calling it "001B" is totally presumptuous because you are giving it a definitive class designation when you do not yet have enough information to do so.

001/001A/001B or Liaoning/CV-17/... are all succsessors of project 1143.5/6
002 or CV-18 is a successor of project 1143.7

Well, we know the Liaoning is a Kuznetsov class, and we know that 001A is a Chinese variant/upgrade to it, so I buy this that far.

001B is not so sure. IMHO, we have not really seen or heard enough yet to know.

I am not sure that we know this either, that the the Chinese CATOBAR is going to be a Orel or Ulyanosk clone.

We will just have to wait and see.

I believe, and would expect, that the Chinese at the point they build 002, will do something more uniquely Chinese.

Time will tell.

Jeff, Thanks for the clarification of all the abbreviations. I am always confused...

BTW, What is the "V" in CV and CVN?

Well, today we say it is "Carrier Vessel."

But actually it goes back to the very early days of carrier operations where the carrier function was viewed as an extension of the sea control and denial mission of cruisers. So, originally, "CV" stood for Cruiser Voler. The "N" of course stands for Nuclear.

Voler is the French verb "to fly."

Interesting...but true.

This is all pure speculation on your part. If you have any actual evidence to demonstrate these relationships (other than your own opinion), feel free to post it. Otherwise you are fighting a losing battle here....
