Do Liaoning fits into the locks of the Panama Canal? If yes, it will travell into the Gulf of Mexico.
I believe that the Liaoning would certainly fit in the Pamal Canal. and them sailing into the Gulf of Mexico causes me no concern whatsoever...or the Caribbean, or the Baring Sea. China has FON rights like all nations do...just as long as they do recognize actual territorial limits.

China will not restrict FON by commercial vessels in the South China Sea, as it is committed to free trade and globalisation. China appears to be objecting to any aggressive or suspicious intent by the USN ships carrying out constant patrols in Chinese claimed territorial waters in the area. There is really no point now to debate the legal vs historical ownership rights of these waters, as the Chinese have already turned those reefs into islands. They have military assets on these reclaimed islands and expected to defend vigorously against any adversary. What is baffling, if I remember correctly, is that the US in the past declared that it was not interfering in the South China Sea disputes. Presently, Malaysia, Philippines and Brunei the 3 of the 5 claimants have shown willingness to negotiate with China for joint venture projects etc., and the Chinese appear to be reciprocating. The whole region would definitely have serious concerns if the US encourages countries to form joint maritime patrols to contain/irritate China in those waters. Mr Tillerston, the soon to be Secretary of State declared that the US will not allow the Chinese PLA-N to get to their islands in the South China Sea - this is a very serious and antagonistic comment. On hindsight It appears unlike previous US Administration, the newly inaugurated President Trump intends to have a trade war with China, and (God Forbid) perhaps a shooting war? We in Asia and the world waits for further moves by the new Trump Administration, BUT would definitely not tolerate a Big Bully. Bullying and hustling of business competitors by a biz tycoon is so different from dealing with nations diplomatically. The sooner Trump and his Administration realises this, the better it is for everyone who believes in Peaceful resolutions.

.

The prototype of the new aircraft was established on the model aircraft carrier in Wuhan Province. The model aircraft carrier is estimated at being 300 meters (984 feet) long and 80 meters (262 feet) wide. The model is complete with a helicopter landing pad and a model of a carrier-borne aircraft.

The Y-7J looks like a hybrid of soviet Antonov An-26 transport aircraft and American E-2 Hawkeye carrier-capable AEW aircraft. The front half of Y-7J is based on the Xian Y-7, the Chinese version of the famous Antonov An-26; the tail section is much similar to the Northrop Grumman C-2 and, above all, the E-2 Hawkeye that is the U.S. AEW platform serving on all the American supercarrier.

The length of the new aircraft will be about 21 meters, with a wingspan of 27 meters will be. Plane Y-7J (03) can reach a maximum flight speed of 700 km / h, and the range will be about 2300 km.

That's most perplexing actually, because firstly this defies all previous opinion that they have yet get a proper carrier-borne AWACS platform, and this setup is just for concept-proving purpose; next the mockup don't mimic the wing folding feature that'd be a requirement; thirdly how'd adding a pair of jet engines (fixed? JATO/RATO kit?) would make launch without catapult assist possible? Just think about the payload capacity those two engines would take away...

But...if they've actually decided on how big the AWACS will be, and given the mockup facility is to concept-proving stuff that'll find its way onto future ships, it could be merely a data-gathering study.
