By than 002 would be the primary carrier for the PLAN with catapult launching capabilities. There would be no more building of the type 001 or 001A unless Pakistan, Russia, or someone else wants one to be build to spec.

The 001 & 001A should have a service life of roughly 50 years (the US carriers served even longer than that), which would necessitate a complete rehaul of her airwing some time between now and then. Even if no more 001/001A are built, the current vessels would need a next-generation fighter to replace her J-15s.

No catapults means less range, regardless if it's a light fighter or a medium fighter. It's might as well be used as an LHD vessel.

That would have to be weighed against the benefit of carrying more combat aircraft per vessel. The role & function of those two ships may change within that period, so anything is possible at this point.

I seriously doubt Liaoning will have a service life of 50 yrs. I say 25 tops. I think she she will likely be replaced by a CVN around 2040 timeframe and struck from active duty.

More likely 001 and 001A will become more dedicated to fleet air defense and close in ASW role, while follow on CATOBAR carriers will take on a more balanced role with heavier emphasis on strike, EWAC, and potential long range ASW roles.

This was the roles USN adopted from early 1950s to early 1970s, when modernized Essex class carriers were used more for fleet ASW and air defense roles, while the new super carriers were oriented more towards an offensive strike role.

I would consider the possibility that the carrier may be used to deploy armed UAV/drones in the next decade, with or without refitting lower powered catapult specifically for the UAV/drones.

Drones with range/payload/survivability comparable to manned fighters won't be appreciably lighter or smaller than manned fighters.

And if they go EMALS they can probably dial down the launch power for something like the Cloud Shadow.

Well Kuznetsov has been in service more than 27 years now and will surley continue for another decade or so. But yes 50 years probably will be doubtfull.
