Then what the fuk was this

Why are Chinese so merciful and forgiving
don't worry, China signed a contract to provide only 1.9 million doses in last December, with more doses promised and local production. Let's wait and see if any thing more than the 1.9 million happens or not. 1.9 is the candy for a taste, it is far from enough to make a difference in Ukraine (41 million population). Remember what happened to the Canadian vaccine cooperation? The trail was delayed to death with the Canadian says they did not get the delivery and we all know the reason.

Carrot and stick, there has to be a carrot first for the stick to work later.

Some vaccine news:
CanSino's one-shot vaccine, Ad5-nCoV, called Convidecia,

Gets green light to continue Phase III trials

(Reuters) - China’s CanSino Biologics Inc said on Monday an independent committee found the drugmaker’s COVID-19 vaccine met its pre-specified primary safety and efficacy targets under an interim analysis of Phase 3 trial data.

No adverse events related to the vaccine had occurred and the findings of the Independent Data Monitoring Committee (IDMC) meant the company could go ahead with advancing its Phase 3 clinical trial for the candidate, known as Ad5-nCoV or Convidecia, CanSinoBio said.

“The company remains blinded to whether the participants involved in the trial received vaccine or placebo,” it said.

CanSinoBio began the late-stage trial for its one-dose vaccine in Russia in September in partnership with NPO Petrovax Pharm LLC and already has a supply deal with Mexico.

Chile welcomes second shipment of Sinovac vaccines

SANTIAGO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Chilean government received a second shipment of nearly 2 million vaccines developed by Chinese firm Sinovac Biotech on Sunday, which will be used to begin the mass vaccination in Chile, scheduled to start on Wednesday.

Chilean Deputy Health Minister Paula Daza said at a press conference that the arrival of the two shipments of Sinovac vaccine CoronaVac will allow for the vaccination of about 4 million people in February.

"There is work and logistics that are being done for vaccinations in the field with municipality representatives," she said.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera wrote on Twitter after the arrival of the second shipment of the Chinese vaccine that mass vaccination will begin on Wednesday, starting with high-risk groups.

Chile on Thursday received a shipment of nearly 2 million Sinovac vaccines as the South American country is preparing for mass vaccination campaign against COVID-19.

Notice Chilean authority only approved the Sinvac vaccine for 19-60 years at the beginning.
But the health ministry said on Wednesday that the age limit could be ignored after a clinical trial that started in November at Chile’s Catholic University indicated no difference in safety or efficacy among younger and older participants.

I heard on the radio that the Israel who have vaccinated three quarters of their population that the Pfizer vaccine is performing better than expected with efficacy in the high 90's. Meanwhile in the UK a lot of people are saying things will be back to near normal by the start of summer.

Somehow I get the feeling that something is going to backfire in regards to these vaccines, the lack of testing and data is going to be a big unknown with regards to this technology although the results of these suspicions can only be glean in the coming months/years

Not showing in the numbers. If anything, Israel's numbers are getting worse, not better.

I hope not. Vaccinating yearly is on the cards though.

At the moment, Israel claimed the efficacy rate is 92%. 1.8M have received their second dose and 1.3M have received their first does or just received the second dose so it is more like 1/3 of Israel has been vaccinated. I think the true efficacy rate is much lower due to the fact that the people who got vaccinated first are those who are most vulnerable so most likely they are very careful.

I think we would know the true efficacy rate within one to two months after majority of people from Israel got vaccinated. Hopefully even if the efficacy rate is not as good as many hoped, the vaccine would still able be drastically reduce the hospitalization and mortality rate. All of us would want things to get back to normal even if it means we need to take vaccinate yearly.

It's actually 70% of the > 60 population being inoculated. About 1/3 of their overall population has been vaccinated.

I'm not sure how they calculated the efficacy that can be compared with the clinical trial data. Vaccine efficacy needs to be calculated using the placebo group (only available in a carefully designed trial) as a parameter. Their 0.04% is only # of people infected / # of total inoculated. This is different from the efficacy parameter..

Anyways, it's very encouraging indeed.

I really hate to use the word hanjian, but I think it's appropriate here. The Chinese wife escaped with her English husband to England the moment things became bad in Wuhan. @manqiangrexue Very appreciative of her Chinese roots. Is that what you call love for the country?
