These mutations are totally random. No one knows when any of these jumps will occur. It may take another thousand years for that key mutation of a key amino acid to take place. It may also happen tomorrow (let's say a hyperactive virus jumps onto a guy who is a heavy smoker. When exposed to a high dose of nicotine, a well-known mutagenic agent, DNA of the said virus might mutate more frequently... who knows). No one knows...
The only thing we can be sure of is that the more animal/human contacts you have, the higher the chances the jump would occur. The more jumps you have, you are giving the viruses more opportunity/experience to explore human defenses and figure out ways to defeat it. Using military practices as an example, it's like you are giving those virus soldiers more chances to practice their craft on human. These battle hardened virus soldiers will have a better chance of defeating their human hosts. The goal is to keep those viruses as greenhorns. The less contact the better.
It's very sad how the Western governments work with FLG TW HK Indian trolls to twist science to promote Western propaganda.

It seems like Europe might actually be doing worse than USA right now in handling COVID. They have some seriously nasty outbreaks this past week. I think if Comrade Trump 
wants to win election, he should spin how Europe is doing worse than MAGA. That can win him a lot of precious votes. I mean, if people feel that Europe is doing worse, Trump could win the election again. Because the fact that a random virus accidentally infects a human sounds so boring. Conspiracy theories are sexier. Throughout history of humankind, every time something like this happens, you get conspiracy theories. The only difference is that this time around, it's an election year in the US and the virus happened to come from China. So all the conspiracy theories get extra fuel.
You would not believe the kinds of conspiracy theories that some lay people typically have for any kind of seemingly puzzling natural events, from all kinds of secret societies (free masons), to aliens (little grey people, green people, lizard people, etc), to time-traveling earth beings coming back from the future, to beings living in fifth/sixth/seventh/eighth/ninth/tenth/eleventh dimensions... The crazier your theories are, the more people will believe you.
Many think that these conspiracy theories are creative, and they must be creative people to believe these theories. Actually, they are the most boring and the least creative bunch. Any time some seemingly weird things happen, the only thing you can think of is some evil government plan or alien invasion? Come on guys, at least be a little more creative. The natural world is the most wondrous and packed with unbelievable stuff.

A little off topic but also on-topic, i think part of Trumps rage against China is prob directly related to his financial losses from covid19 restricted travel/office work. Imagine waging a cold/hot war over personal vendetta. I guess that is why sometimes democracy becomes democrazy.
I think the article actually said that was the reason that Israel used the Mossad/Military channel than Health Ministry. Think about it, how could or dare Israel to slap Trump/Pompeo's face by openly endorse Chinese vaccine when US just pressed some Arab countries to recognize Israel? That is a huge cake that Israel will not want to loose.
I bet this is the only time in history that health officials or diplomats have to be covered as spies to do their job, usually it is the other way around.
