Scientists in China believe new drug can stop pandemic 'without vaccine'
Scientists in China are taking a multi-pronged approach to fight the Coronavirus :
- A drug being tested by scientists at China's prestigious Peking University could not only shorten the recovery time for those infected, but even offer short-term immunity from the virus, researchers say.
- Sunney Xie, director of the university's Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics, told AFP that the drug has been successful at the animal testing stage.
- This may offer temporary protection for medical workers for a few weeks, which Xie said they are hoping to "extend to a few months".
- He added that the drug should be ready for use later this year and in time for any potential winter outbreak of the virus, which has infected 4.8 million people around the world and killed more than 315,000.
- "Planning for the clinical trial is underway," said Xie, adding it will be carried out in Australia and other countries since cases have dwindled in China, offering fewer human guinea pigs for testing.

Australia did not sell less to other countries. China just buy more and more from Australia, thus contributing to Australia's economic growth and the prosperity of her citizens. If the government and people of Australia do not understand that, they deserve what is coming to them.

I understand that your bullet points above are direct quotes from the article. I would just like to say that I hate calling patients and test subjects the "human guinea pigs"... I can call myself a human guinea pig when I volunteer to test something for the first time. But I would never call other volunteers "human guinea pigs". It carries a negative tone... And a little disrespect to the volunteers, especially coming from a health care professional.
I hate to always be a party pooper, but I would caution that their drug has just finished animal testing. Usually, a very small percentage of test drugs manage to pass the clinical trials after successfully passing the animal tests. Let's see how it goes. Somehow, the efficacy of the drugs is almost always diluted in human, when compared with their efficacy in mice. And the opposite goes with the toxicity. Although we know that it must be because of the different physiology of human and mice, but we don't know exactly why and how...
About using plasma containing antibodies in general, I just chatted with a colleague of mine who has been treating COVID-19 patients at a major hospital in Houston for the past 2 months. She told me that she has major doubts about the efficacy of antibodies. She's seen conflicted results and the antibodies are not as clear cut as many in the media have made it out to be. In fact, she's not even sure if we can be immune to future infection even if we have recovered from a previous infection... i.e. can the antibodies generated from a previous infection can prevent us from a new infection? A short answer is "not so sure"...

as with most conspiracy theories it asks you to believe a double theory. 1) that this was accidentally released in the US then 2) that it was intended to Hurt China. How could if the lab that created it be shut down they then improve it and release it on China? If it was released in the US by mistake first why didn’t the ethnic Chinese populations of the east coast suddenly keel over dead? Surely there are other countries in the West they could choose to test it on, Uk Brazil for example.

Interesting news, I think it's about more than just the current epidemic though, because I can't see manufacturers shifting their production bases back and forth based on transient issues. I'm suspecting that a lot of manufacturers are finding that productivity isn't necessary where they thought it would be or perhaps there are other factors which didn't show up in the numbers in their original research.
