Masks do not protect whoever wears them. They protect the other party.

I guess that’s why doctors don’t need them when dealing with COVID19 patients?

N95 and better respirators can effectively prevent infection if used correctly. But even regular masks DO massively reduce both your chances of being infected, and the likely severity of the illness if you are infected.

Sub-N95 masks cannot guarantee you that it will stop even one virion from reaching you, but what it can do is stop the overwhelming majority of pulmonary viral infection vectors as well as stop larger droplets with huge number of virions inside from reaching you, thereby massively reducing the risk.

Can you still catch COVID19 even with a sub-N95 mask? Sure, but your odds are exponentially improved with them compared to without.

To argue against wearing sub-N95 masks on the basis that they cannot 100% guarantee to protect you from catching the virus is exactly like arguing against wearing a seatbelt because you might die in a car crash even if you did wear one.
