If anyone gives you grief about wearing a mask, look them in the eye with no shame and ask them if they would prefer you to remove your mask and cough in their face? If they are too dense, literally spell it out that you wearing a mask is as much for their benefit as it is for your own.

All too often Chinese people adapt an apologetic and submission attitude in such situations, which creates the impression that they are somehow at fault for wearing the mask, which also often exacerbates the hostility.

As with animals, instinct and psychology play a far more important role in human interactions than what most people would give it credit for.

If you act like you are in the wrong, then people would start feeling like you are doing something wrong even if you are not. And showing any sign of weakness will again embolden thugs to push their luck.

By standing your ground and educating them on the basic benefits of you wearing a mask, you are both giving subconscious signals to the thugs not to mess with you; and also giving them the conscious fear of you lifting your mask and ‘infecting’ them.

Good ideal, but not sure it will work in practice. Don't forget, the people that take the exception, and confront you for wearing your mask, is likely to be:
1/ drunken bum. 2/ two-times looses. 3/ plain redneck racists.

None of them is likely to take the time to listen to your rationale for their "education" for wearing your mask.

Even if they took the time to be "educated". They won't have the brain capacity to assimilate and analysis the information you've provided for free!

So they will react with the only way they know how, by lashing out at you. Be on your guards!

This article is quite misleading. South Korea turned on Surveillance State big time, required people to put an app on the phone, did extremely aggressive contact tracing of the cult members, then forced each of them into testing or quarantine. In the West that would be hollered as religious suppression. What South Korea did was target a religious group and pursued each member relentlessly.

South Korea's "model" isn't a model because you have that poor church as an identifiable target. This aggressive measure --- inconceivable in a truly democratic nation that gives lip service to religious freedom --- was able to contain the virus from taking off from first base.

Italy cannot do that. There is no organization or institutionalized groups of individuals it can target --- institutions keep member databases. Country does not have a sophisticated citizen tracking apparatus. As a matter of fact the EU has been pushing against the American tech giants on data privacy.

Do you know where S. Korea got the model for these apps? From China.

Do you think that people in the EU and in the US are willing to download an app that allows the government to track their every move?

Both China and S. Korea also have something in common, populations with Asian cultural values whose citizenry for the most part, trust in their government. You would need to be, if you want to download such an app into your phone and turn it on every time you leave the house. You have to be if people are voluntarily wearing face masks en masse instead of ridiculing them. You have to be for people being willing to show up in testing centers to get themselves checked.

If you look at places like S. Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, they appear to be able to beat the virus at the containment level. Italy, Europe and US are way pass the containment stage. You simply cannot apply the same strategy once the cat is out of the bag.

Advice for handling situations like these, need to come from the doctors and only from the doctors, not from self righteous journalists and politicians.

Scientists agree that the coronavirus started in Wuhan when the US complains China is not letting foreigners in to know what's going on? I thought China was not transparent yet they seem to know everything that goes on in China.
