Coronavirus 2019-2020 thread (no unsubstantiated rumours!)

So you mentioned previously that other coronaviruses thrive and last longest at 6cC.

But suppose a coronavirus is cooled to 0oC or say -20oC in the winter air.

What is the likelihood of a coronavirus successfully reviving back to body temperature in real-life?

I honestly don’t know. We use HIV virus in my lab to turn normal human cells to cancer ones so that we can study themon’t worry, we use only parts of the virus. They can no longer hurt their hosts. We typically keep them at -80. When we need to use them, we simply dip the vial containing the viruses into a 37oC water bath for a few seconds to thaw them out. They are happy as ever.

I don’t know how a Coronavirus would behave. But they should behave similarly.

So a frozen virus on a surface in the cold might be picked up with a human when that human touches the surface. Once in the human skin with warm temperature, the virus should wake up in no time. My guess though... I’m no virologist...

Prof hunter teaches medicine and he doesn't think that the UK is in that situation in which Brits shoul cease to visit pubs for a while. This is a gem.

Wow, that's nuts, considering that there are only 28 or so ECMO machines in UK. Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation machine oxygenates a patient's blood outside of the body as a last resort when patient's lungs have failed. I think Hubei/Wuhan got at least 61 such machines.

Today (Mar. 13) there are 11 new cases and 13 deaths in China, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan (table 1). There are 4 new cases and 13 deaths in Hubei including Wuhan (table 2). There are 7 new cases and no death in the rest of China, excluding Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan(table 3). All 7 cases were imported from overseas.

all mask are sold out, so even if people want to wear it, they can't. i know alot chinese and chinese descendants bought alot mask in jan and send back to china. i think i bought at least 200 mask in jan for my in-law to take back and given to their family members. i probably should save few for my family but now its out of stock everywhere, same with hand sanitizer, same with toilet and tissue paper. this morning eggs start going down pretty fast in grocery store too, everybody is stocking up on essential. oh rice and flour is gone too at local stores. its crazy, never seen so many empty shelves in costco and kroger.

Hang in there Bub, it will be alright, we've just got to get through the next couple of days, and the engine of democracy will kick in and turn up the fire. Remember all those paper masks actually do, is keep you from spreading your own germs, and you don't need to worry about that unless you are already infected, and odds are, you're not, so stay calm. Do you have children Bub?

It's just wrong to tell people they shouldn't wear masks unless infected.

People should be allowed to wear it without being stigmatized.

I've got no problem if you want to wear a mask brother, its a free country, come on out to the grand prairie my friend, I was wearing a mask in the NICU a few weeks ago.....

People feels like they can buy the freedom from the illness by spending money for toilet paper, foodstuff and so on.

But it is just one step on the ladder of grief .
It is the bargaining, the feeling like with money you can buy your life.

Best part of the population have to develop immunity.
And it is possible only if best part of the population catch it.

There is no other way.

Come on, Vesicles already explained what an ignorant idea that is, that's not even taking into account the people who have been re-infected, rest, eat healthy, take vitamins, avoid exposure, and wash your hands with soap and water....

Businessman Jack Ma, Asia’s richest man, announced on Thursday he would donate 500,000 test kits for the Wuhan coronavirus and 1 million masks to the U.S. to help fight the outbreak.
“Drawing from my own country’s experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate personal protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus. We hope that our donation can help Americans fight against the pandemic!” Ma

in a statement.

Ma is the co-founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba. He has also made donations through the Alibaba Foundation and Jack Ma Foundation to other countries hit by the outbreak, including Italy, Iran, Korea, Japan and Spain.
Ma was revealed in 2018 to be a member of the Chinese Communist Party. The businessman has defended Premier Xi Jinping’s attitude toward foreign firms who want to gain a foothold in China. In an interview with the BBC that same year, Ma

of international companies, “if they come here they have to say OK, I follow the Chinese rules and laws.”

“The crisis presents a huge challenge to all humankind in a globalized world. The pandemic we face today can no longer be resolved by any individual country,” Ma said. “Rather, we need to combat the virus by working hand-in-hand. At this moment, we can’t beat this virus unless we eliminate boundaries to resources and share our know-how and hard-earned lessons.”

The U.S. is facing a shortage of coronavirus diagnostic tests, and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have expressed frustration with federal agencies for not preparing enough tests.
“We have a serious deficiency in being prepared for testing,” Senator Lamar Alexander (R., Tenn.)

on Thursday. “We not only need a better system for later. We need a better system for now, and we’re going to focus on that as rapidly as we can.”
Wow. From National Review!

God, this is just terrible information! Dr Bruce Aylward of WHO mentioned the issue of children, and one of the first thing he clarified was that this could be an artifact from the fact that school stopped early on. If all the children were staying home, then obviously they would not get getting infected as much!

Reading that article, I can't help but wonder, is the UK purposely trying to self-destruct?
Even if we discard the herd immunity statement by bojo as nonsense, we must think how 'rational' experts such as this Dr. Hunters is. If the government follows advices of people like him it is unlikely that the UK will fare better than other European countries.

Asian Americans facing racism over coronavirus fears are buying guns in droves

An ABC News

details the many ways that the coronavirus pandemic is negatively affecting Asian Americans and how many are turning to their Second Amendment rights to defend themselves.

The report detailed several instances of Asian Americans facing discrimination and outright racism from people citing the spread of the coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, China.
In one example, an Asian American man was

A less contentious expression of the discrimination is the drop in customers for Asian American restaurants. Many are closing temporarily while some may close down completely.
In the face of such racial tension, Asian Americans are turning to self-defense.
An Asian American gun dealer, David Liu in Arcadia, California, told ABC News that he has already done as much business in the first three months of 2020 as he did in all of last year.

When the ABC reporter asked one of his customers, an Asian American man wearing a face mask, why he was buying a gun, he answered simply, "For self-defense."
"People are panicking because they don't feel secure," Liu told

Can't blame them with all the vile coming from FOX, GOP and administration and federal agency over the past few days, Better prudent than being a victim. It will save lives.
