On Saturday Downing Street announced that it was introducing pre-departure tests for people travelling to the UK. From Tuesday, they will have to complete a lateral flow or PCR test 48 hours before entering the country. Officials said the move came as evidence emerged that the Omicron strain had been reported in more than 40 countries, with apparent community transmission in places such as Norway. They also said that there was evidence that the incubation period was shorter than for other variants.

Labour had been pushing for the introduction of the tests. A Downing Street source said that new evidence about the spread of the variant and its characteristics had driven the decision. It will cause further frustration for the travel industry, which has been heavily affected by Covid restrictions. Nigeria will also be added to the government’s red list of countries on Monday.

I am just gobsmacked in the incompetence and uselessness of the political process in the U.K. that scientific method of approach in testing flight seekers for example has yet to be implemented. Holy freaking smokes... And they dared for China to open their country? Insanity.

It started ONLY after people calling "Indian variant" (Delta). Delta is the first one being officially and openly adopted by WHO. All earlier variants were posthumously bestowed. Maybe UK also complained about "British variant" that contribute to the naming scheme.

I agree with the WHO. Viruses/variants shouldn't be called based on the location they have been derected.

Also not by random letters and numbers like B0629 because the public would be confused

I think using the Greek alphabet is a good compromise. Sufficiently different but still easier for the public to remember/say/accept

It happened because the British were kicking up a massive fuss about the Kent variant. Delta was the first time a Greek code name was assigned to the naming of new variants. It didn’t help that all the western MSM news reporters always added ‘Indian’ somewhere in their reporting least the WHO’s evil plan actually succeeded.

Its not even a month and it has reached a 74% share of total tested viruses. Give it another week or so and it will reach total dominance

Honestly, even if I was pumped full of hopium, I still can't find a single positive on this new variant. All the reported data and news paint a very grim future where the Omicron variant will most likely be a huge problem. 0 positives, all negatives

South African scientist have said that by the time of the detection of Omicron, it is believed to have been circulating for weeks. So I think the seemingly short time of taking over is just an illusion.

The question is that does any country do DNA sequencing for every PCR test sample and every patient administered into hospital? I don't think so, nobody has that resource. So the detection is pretty much a luck, maybe an increased luck by regular detection work. Even the detection of Covid itself was a lucky work thanks to the vigilance of doctors in Wuhan. If this has happened in Europe, most patients would have been sent home to spread the virus for months. It would only be detected and reported if a patient had severe symptoms.

The gold standard in scientific evidence is a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Don't know what more evidence you want. Do you want a long term RCT, because you will wait forever because nobody is collecting that data, and all the long term observational studies suggest it's safe. Also safety is relative to the disease symptoms. It's all a relative trade off.

The Chinese mRNA will have EUA soon, potentially in early-mid 2022.... but the Pfizer and Modernas does not have EUA...rather, they both have FULL regulatory FDA approval since August 2021.

So I'm glad we both agree on the same gold standard (fully regulatory FDA approval) using short term RCT + long term observational data as the gold standard. Or is it an anti-Western EUA because I'm 95% pretty sure China will EUA their own Chinese mRNAs too as they did their inactivated vaccines.
