Computer Talk

Re: What type of computer do you have??

I use a HP laptop, got it a little less than two months ago. Intel Core 2 2.4ghz processor, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, and 250GB hard drive. It works fairly well, but I have found out that even with an okay video card and a lot of RAM, laptops have a hard time running games. It overheats faster than a brute's plasma rifle.

It runs 32-bit Vista.

Re: Many Chinese internet users are angry about Microsoft's blackout scheme..

I think that computer users have to accept what happens if they use pirated/cracked software. Companies won't develop software if no one pays for it, so really are they saying that some people should buy it and they should get it free? Sure I'm sympathetic towards those who like to trial something first, but if they never intend to buy it under any circumstances.....

Nowadays, many software found on the Internet have a free version for non-commercial users. I think this is good, because they gain influency over the market and earn money from those commercial users.

I use a Sony VIAO SZ68N laptop I bought last year, only 1.7kg weight inc. battery, love it, can even play games on it, hehe, but costly, costed me about 3.5k US dollar, but worth it, although graphic card is abit weak, I downgraded the OS to XP from Vista, don't like Vista.

As a computer scientist I find people's dislike of Vista amusing. It is so much more secure, and even if it is slower, I would take security any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Re: What type of computer do you have??

I'm using a Sony notebook: Intel CoreDuo T7100, 1.8GHz; 2GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB hard drive, 15.4" WXGA, GeForce 8400M GT, Vista Home Premium.
UMTS / HDPA connection or cable at home.
Untile 14 month ago I had a desktop Athlon XP 2500 - 1,85GHz (sometime ran it at 3200 - 2,2 GHz), 1GB RAM Radeon X800GTO, Win 2000
Before that (pre 2004) Pentium III 450MHz, 512 MB and Elsa E-Razor 3D.

I think I've been online since 2003.

Windows is sometimes challanging, but it works, ... more or less.

Re: Many Chinese internet users are angry about Microsoft's blackout scheme..

If you turn on Automatic Update, you'll find that every month you have a lot security update. If you read the description of the updates they're always read as "a security hole is found to allow hacker to gain controll over it... and so on"

You have to wonder just how many of those security updates actually patches securities holes and not some sort of spyware.

In anycase, if people really have issues affording genuine software, do what I did: switch to Linux.

people in China just need to understand that they can't bank on free rides anymore. They've had access to unlicensed software for too long. They actually think its their right to use unlicensed software. I'm all for some lessons to teach these people the importance of IP.

Re: Computer Talk!!

How to keep your Windows PC running properly.

1. Have automatic updates on.
2. Use a good anti-virus package like AVG that doesn't suck up all your processing/memory.
3. Use something like Ad-Aware to remove spyware and crap.
4. Defragment your hard drives every couple of months.
5. Make a fresh install of Windows every 1-2 years.
