Re: What type of computer do you have??

Custom-built. I forget now what the whole thing is, but there's a Dual Core CPU, 2 GB RAM and a Geforce 7000 series NVidia card in there (bought it because it's silent and makes the PC much quieter).

Still running Windows XP. No chance I'm going to use Vista until the price has come down further and more work has been done on the bugs.

Vista works great for me. No problems so far. Of course we don't play any games or chat or any of that other nonsense..such as download music or videos. we just surf the web and do some word processing.

Custom computer?? Intresting the first two computers I had were hand me downs(second hand) computers my oldest son built. Custom in other words. The first one was a nightmare. The second one was a pretty good computer.

One more question..What kind of server do you guys have? Hi-speed? Cable modem? wireless? Or the old fashion dial up? I'm running a hi-speed cable modem. Cost about $40 USD a month.

Custom computer?

Yeah. Rather than get the rubbish a lot of companies put in their pre-made models, you buy the parts yourself and put them together. That way you know exactly what you're getting.

That's whats great about custom comps, you can get all of the best in one package. Sure it costs more, but depending on how you set it up it can do whatever you want. I set mine up for gaming specifically, and as I said earlier it runs any game with no problems at all. It's also the fastest computer I've ever seen, but I spent around $2500 on the whole setup.

And to answer your question I use a cable connection BD.

Re: Many Chinese internet users are angry about Microsoft's blackout scheme..

It is?? The microsoft products I use work fine. Allways have. No problem. Of course my computer is only 4 months old..My previuos computer worked fine until the last year or so, I just did not have enough memory.

Popeye, you also admit that Microsoft is slow that you need a new computer. If you turned to another OS, I believe your old computer still work fine. Microsoft's OS take up a huge amount of memory; Windows XP is suggested to 512MB minimum (of course if you have only 256MB, it still work), Vista requires 1GB. I have 2GB on my desktop, because I need to run Visual Studio 2008 Professional. It's a trial version, not priated. I think that Microsoft has spent too much system resource for its interface. If you turn on Automatic Update, you'll find that every month you have a lot security update. If you read the description of the updates they're always read as "a security hole is found to allow hacker to gain controll over it... and so on"

Re: What type of computer do you have??

I'll say something in contrast, in another thread seem like I stand on one side and other members stand on another side. It's OK, in a war game we always have red army and blue army. Cambodia is a paridise of what is a hell in the west. Let's take one example: the second-hand products. Almost all kind of products, from heavy machinery to vehicle and even clothes and shoes, you can always find a second hand one.

So is my laptop. I got an IBM T41 some time about 3 years ago, it was made in China but imported from Canada. I like it very much. It has a Centrino 1.6Ghz CPU and 512MB memory, 32MB of VGA, 40GB of HDD and wireless LAN. Recently I have upgraded its memory to 1GB and a battery pack which can last 4 hours without power input. I also change a HDD with 160GB. The laptop came to me with a licensed Windows XP SP1, to keep the Windows when change the HDD, I used Symantec Ghost to clone everything from the old HDD to the new one. I worried that my OS wouldn't be genuine after cloning. I updated my Windows with Microsoft website and it's still consider genuine. Yeah, it's great.

I have another computer at work, it's a desktop computer, actually it belongs to my company. It's a custom built one or we call it cloned computer. It has an Intel D915GAV with VGA, Sound and LAN built-in on the mother board. 2GB memory, and 80GB HDD and Samsung LCD 17" monitor. Both of my computers run Windows XP Professional SP3.

Re: What type of computer do you have??

At home I got a custom built computer. The casing has been with me for more than 10 years now, and the CPU and motherboard has gone with many changes, such as Athlons. Now it has a Pentium Duo Core 2 4500, the same chip it got back in 2006. Its an aging computer, still has AGP 8X and a nVidia 7600 card. But I don't PC game anymore so I don't feel any need to upgrade it. It's just a multimedia computer for me now.

My main computer at work is an HP 530 business notebook. It has a great screen and runs Vista Business Basic. I like the notebook's sleekness and light weight, the two USB ports only is the negative. Next time I should go with something like Toshiba or Acer that has an SD memory card slot and multiple USB ports. I dare say the new Mac Notebook looks very nice too.

My history with computers goes back right to the beginning of the Microcomputer revolution, and I have seen and tried just about anything. My first computer was an Apple II, and my first "portable" if you can call it that, is a Kaypro II. The tank like Kaypro looks like something more like the military would use. With my Apple, I first learned how to do assembly language programming via the MOSTEK 6502 machine code. Ah the joy of shifting bits through the CPU registers.

Recently hehe, I managed to recover my old Apple eMate 300 from the junk pile. The modem card ain't working, but the computer is. Based on the Newton OS, the computer uses a touchscreen and is completely solid state, that means no moving parts, with the storage medium being flash memory. It is a long long distant ancestor to the Palm, iPhone and iPod Touch technologies.

That's one of the reasons I started this thread. I am curious what sort of computers our members worldwide have. And of course wanted to know the pros and cons of different OS.(Operating Systems)

Re: What type of computer do you have??

Been through my fill of Operating System Wars. Tried all sorts of different OSes including

Apple DOS 3.3
AppleSoft Basic
C/PM
MSDOS
can't remember the name of the OS used for the Motorola 6809 processor. Basically its one of the real time control OSes. Might be FlexOS.

Been through different iterations of the MacOS, from its classic 68000 derived form to the PowerPC versions, but never really went with Mac OS X. My daughter however, has a Mac Book with that OS.

One of my favorites, AmigaDOS.

Played around with various IBM proprietary operating systems, including IBM 3680, OS/400 (for the AS/400), and not the least OS/2, including OS/2 v4 Warp.

With Windows, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, 95 SE, NT, NT Pro, 2000, XP and now Vista.

Dabbled with Unix and Linux, like in Red Hat. I seem to be getting old now. My daughter likes multiple OSes, she's got an Acer One running on a mobile Linux variant.

Celphones and game consoles also have their own operating systems. There is even a Linux variant on the PS3. Linux is also making inroads on celphones, and a number of Motorola phones have it inside, such as the Razor 2. And of course, you all know Symbion, which goes into the phones of Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Siemens.

Our old computer is still in use. My stepdaughter & her family has it. No matter what we did to it it got "clunky" ,yes slow after about 1-2 hours use. this new computer is on for hours and works fine all the time.

One thing I like about microsoft is that their products are compatible with most every thing that is available on line.

As far as hacking is concerned. I'm not worried. No one has ever succesfully hacked my computer. And if they did. So what? I'll just go to WalMart,Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples or Circuit City etc, etc.. and buy another one. :D I have an excellent anti-virus and firewall.

No matter what anyone post I will stick with my microsoft vista home premium..Works great for me..:D I'm sure everyones else OS works great for them!!...
