Chinese firms are helping France build out it's "battery valley" along the northern coast that's home to a growing number of battery-gigafactories.

This plant, funded by China's Envision battery company, began operations in June of last year to serve French carmaker Renault Group.

Battery modules roll off the automated production line after assembly and testing and are shipped directly to Renault for assembly in electric vehicles.

Supporting facilities for power battery production are also emerging across northern France.

At the Port of Dunkirk, a battery materials collaboration between Chinese and French enterprises is in the planning and construction phase.
Once completed, the first phase is expected to produce 40,000 tons of lithium-ion battery cathode materials, enough to support battery production for 500,000 NEVs.

There are nearly 50 Chinese companies who've invested in the region across industries including EVs, energy and chemicals.

Not surprisingly, China's renewables are one of the biggest winners of the Iran War. From the New York Times:

China’s Electrostate Is Poised to Win From War in the Middle East

A cluster of Chinese firms is poised to win big from the energy crisis set off by the war in the Middle East, building on booming investment in artificial intelligence.

According to the Wall Street Journal (not by Lingling Wei):

An Iran War Winner: China’s Green Industrial Complex

Beijing’s push to sell its solar and wind power to the world gains momentum from Mideast troubles
  • The Iran war’s disruption of Middle East oil and gas supplies is driving countries globally to adopt renewable energy, boosting demand for Chinese technology.

More from Bloomberg:

China’s Battery Exports Surge as War Drives Energy-Supply Crunch

  • China’s lithium battery exports surged in the first quarter, with a 50% year-on-year jump for the three months ended March 31.
  • The rise in battery shipments was accompanied by double-digit percentage growth in exports of other green technologies, including electric vehicles and wind turbines.
  • Chinese battery makers stand to be among the biggest beneficiaries of the shift to alternative power sources due to the global energy-supply crunch arising from the war in the Middle East.

The Financial Times: CATL is expanding into the energy storage business.

Battery giant CATL is no longer just a play on electric vehicles

The Chinese group’s expansion into non-automotive areas will benefit from policy-driven demand to offset consumer cycles

Long piece on the renewable buildout in Egypt.

Now, Egypt — the most populous Arab country, chaotic but richly endowed with history, struggling to build a modern economy after decades of political turmoil — is joining a number of countries banking on Chinese clean technology, from the China-made solar panels blanketing Pakistan and Nigeria to the China-made EVs joining traffic in Brazil and Mexico. Egypt wants to increase the share of electricity coming from renewables in its grid from

to 45% in just the next two years. And it can’t happen without help from Beijing.

“If it were Europeans working on this project, you wouldn’t have a project at all,” Omar Nagi, a former Siemens manager who now helps oversee Infinity Power’s wind projects, said while looking out at the new site. “With the Chinese, you have a project.”

Export controls on solar production equipment (esp. HJT) are being considered in light of Tesla's efforts to spin up North American production. Personally I am in favor, because Trump and his morons probably won't object due to hating solar anyway for stupid ideological reasons. So the political cost of export controls is quite low here.

BEIJING/LOS ANGELES, April 15 (Reuters) - Chinese officials have held initial talks with providers of equipment to make solar panels as they consider limiting exports of the most advanced technology to the United States, said five people with knowledge of the consultations. Such a clampdown would risk investments by U.S. firms and set back a race for space-based computing, as China, estimated to make ‌more than 80% of the world's solar panel components, is also home to the top 10 suppliers of equipment to make solar cells.

If adopted, such a move could threaten plans by U.S. firms, such as Tesla

, to build new factories or expand existing ones in efforts to boost local production. It would also widen export controls in another area of technology where China has a lead, building on Beijing's move to control rare earth exports a year ago in response to U.S. tariffs.
