Coal prices plummet as green energy surges in China

Coal prices have fallen to their lowest level since June 2021, primarily due to oversupply and subdued demand from China. Meanwhile, solar power capacity in China doubled that of coal power, with a 33.7% year-on-year growth rate. As China’s commitment to renewable energy strengthens, coal-fired power generation showed a modest 1.8% increase.

As far as i understand the water used is passed through the steam turbine condenser in the tertiary or secondary loop. Wouldn't large quantities of water still be needed then.

Water use in nuclear reactors is primarily by the generator. What you describe is a once-through system where the water used to generate steam is dumped into the source along with the condensed steam. Many nuclear plants no longer use this system due to the massive amount of water required.

There are a few ways to decrease water use, but most likely the TSMR is using a dry cooling system. It would essentially act like a car's radiator and the steam is essentially air cooled, probably assisted by a fan, and then recycled back into the generator. It would reduce efficiency, but not as much as with current plants due to the higher temperature of the primary cooling circuit.

That's not what I'm describing.

This is what I'm describing, since water in the reactor loop and steam turbine loop is recycled. The water consumption there is low. The big demand for water would be for the condenser.

That's sorta my point a dry cooling system is not a unique feature of molten salt reactors. a PWR could be placed in a dry area too.

Not really lol.

In comparison with the US:

At the bottom of the article:
The federal government estimates that renewable energy is

to 42% of electricity generation by 2050
– which won’t be enough. Even the slump in emissions from pandemic shutdowns last year won’t make much of a dent, with a 4% rebound in emissions forecast for 2021. Getting “back to normal” after the pandemic spells utter catastrophe in a decade where scientists have said emissions must be cut in half to avoid dangerous global heating.

In comparison China's goal of net zero by 2060 is basically guaranteed to be hit earlier, like by 2050, just like how it's 2030 renewables goal is gonna get hit already by ~2025.

Not to mention there's articles and research into cumulative emission, including relative to population (so every human on earth are supposed to be equal when it comes to emission) and in there, the fault of climate change lies in US and EU.
