CN event only. Delicious in Dungeon collaboration with Arknights. Senshi, Chiichuk, Laios and Marcille as new characters in the game.

Already liking the memes coming out of this collab.

Context: Laios's second skill allows him to "frighten" blocked enemies, meaning that they cannot perform normal attacks. The skill animation is basically this pose.

Context: Gummy's second skill animation is her cooking for ten seconds before healing surrounding allies by throwing food at them.

Context: The Church of the Deep/Seaborn enemies featured in Under Tides, Stultifera Navis and Mizuki & Caerula Arbor are hyper-adaptive sea monsters. Basically lovecraftian horrors capable of causing planetary extinction (think Tyranids from 40k or the Zerg from StarCraft).

Context: Viviana appeared in the Near Light event as an elite enemy and Contingency Contract #8 as a miniboss. She had a powerful explosion attack which was capable of destroying an entire clear attempt if she locked onto the right (or wrong) operator. When she became available as a playable 6-star guard operator, her kit was incredibly underwhelming compared to other operators of the same class and subclass, and didn't even feature her special attack as a skill.

This gave me the thought of "Why doesn't China have an indigenous game console?", but then I remembered consoles have only been allowed in China since 2015. I also remember around 8 years ago the Tomahawk F1 console was announced by a Chinese company and flopped tremendously:

If China's games industry starts developing beyond phone-centric gacha games and Chinese studios start pumping out 3A titles more frequently, there could be a market for consoles. The PS4's success was due in large part to really good exclusive single-player games (God of War and all of the Naughty Dog games, Bloodborne, Ghosts of Tsushima, etc). Also considering that there isn't really competition in this field anymore since Xbox seems like it's doomed to fail and Nintendo seems to be working at a snail's pace at releasing the Switch 2.
Game console market is notoriously tricky. There is not much room for competition as it is. The room for Microsoft was basically made by Sega's exit. As noted by previous posts, the hardware is usually sold at a loss initially, made up by software sales and later on by hardware cost reduction by amortization/simplification. As you noted yourself software side is almost entirely driven by first party exclusives initially (Xbox - Halo, Nintendo - Mario, etc, Sony - various properties over the years.). Is there a Chinese company with the capital and clout to create a console? Probably Tencent could, but its probably not worth it. Xbox is the newest entry (and at this point, 20 years old) only came out because Microsoft believed the future of computers was beyond PCs such as the living room (example:

). Even Sony's original entry into the console market was basically an accident, the real-OG Playstation being a Super Nintendo with a CD add-on

. I would wager that such an impetus does not exist for any Chinese company at this point in time. The closest is maybe Huawei looking for a way to get Harmony OS out there, but a console is too niche for that.

Remember that IGN rated the game 7/10.

Lol, most reviews I saw panned it. That was one of the higher scores...

A console PC like the Steam machine would do wonders. Xbox seems to be trying to do that with their future Xboxes. China has the largest PC userbase and playerbase so it makes sense for Huawei to do something like a Steam Machine once Harmony PC OS is further into development.

The only way for China to break into the console market is for the West to slip up. There is currently an opportunity because the AAA gaming development scene in the West is in rough shape. 60% of the market is taken up by large live service games, i.e. COD, Fortnite, Apex, Genshin, Minecraft, Roblox, and Pubg. Traditional AAA games cost hundreds of millions to make and need to sell 20 million copies to turn a profit. The risk is high because AAA games are also the most difficult to make. On top of that, the companies in the West are selfish from top to bottom. At the bottom workers focus on pushing their political agenda in the game and out of the game (DEI, unions). At the top, the execs try to squeeze as much profit as possible from games to please their shareholders via layoffs, closures, and outsourcing. In totality, Western AAA game development is too expensive, too slow, and too unfocused.

The window of opportunity is here. China can make AAA games in a cheaper, faster, and more focused manner. When Chinese AAA games are coming out consistently and at a high quality exclusively on a Tecent console, that'll move units in China and some in the West. The total amount of revenue may not exceed a few billion but it's a good foundation for the future, especially when China develops EUV capabilities and can make the most capable consoles for cheaper.

Consoles are huge in the west because of inertia from historical consoles that were far superior to PCs of their time. Chinese people generally grew up playing computer games and with the crippling of the console market until 2015, a Chinese console is almost impossible to make happen. China will needs its own operating system and game engine before a console is viable.

Anyhow anything Tencent touches turns into steaming piles of cash grabs with terrible user experience, there'll be more ads than gameplay in a tencent console.

I think one of the phone brands would probably give it a try. I hope Huawei gives it a try.
