Re: Is stealth UAV Vulnerable to EM Bomb?

The weak link in EMP shielding is the antenna, which links the shielded electronics to the outside world and which could provide a bridge for EMP to get at the electronics inside the shielding, but a basic fuse would provide protection there, and something slightly more advanced like a common surge protector would allow the connection to be restablished without needing a manual fuse change.

That's very disappointing. But then how Iran intercepted the most modern US UAV?

Re: Is stealth UAV Vulnerable to EM Bomb?

That is a common mistake people make when estimating effects of EMP . In fact there is a very fast component of EMP pulse (high frequency ) E1 which would defeat any common surge protector and simple fuse , simply because reaction time of such devices is finite . In close proximity most circuits directly connected to antenna would be damaged , and UAVs would definitely lose contact with the base .

Thanks for this info

Re: Is stealth UAV Vulnerable to EM Bomb?

I'm sure UCAV's are EMP hardened especially the bigger and more expensive ones. Those are also autonomous meaning they can fly themselves even if the signals are jammed or have no way to reestablish the link. It all depends on the mission profiles and operational directive.
At this moment even autonomous UCAV (at least in the US) are not preprogrammed to fire their weapons and still requires human input and verification for that. So technically a UCAV cannot fire it's weapons if the link with it's human pilot is lost. However that is just semantics.
If I'm sending a bunch of UAVs on a suicide mission (i.e swarm attack) and I know there is a possibility of the opponent sending an EMP blast wave I will preprogramed all my UAVs to also fire their weapons at the preselect target. In that case an EMP blast would have little effect on the UAVs.

Thanks a lot for the info.

Isn't this just simply a B-2A ???

Deino

not sure, this pic was posted on many plaaf watchers' weibo accounts, so i thought it belonged here as well. people are arguing about whether it's a model, a b2, or an indigenous uav.

i think the nasty looking sky increases the likelihood that it's in china somewhere haha.

Looks like a Baidou-pedia article or something similar that can be edited by anyone. The body reminds me more of the J-10B with stealth shaping.

It would be cool if the navalised J-10/J-20 variant looks something like it with cockpit. In fact I wonder whether it will be feasible to use the same design for the manned carrier fighter and unmanned UAV, difference being the presence or lack of a cockpit, with minor changes to the body if necessary.
