I wonder if we'll see active service of the JJ-9 by next year?

see, I was under the impression JJ-9 is already in active service (meaning in training schools I guess) and is now just starting mass production (they finalized the design I guess). It's taken a lot longer than we all thought.

Even though its taken a long time, at least its still a lot closer to service than the L-15, I still believe there a is a place for both aircraft in the PLAAF and PLANAF and both aircraft have pretty good export potential as well, especially with the connections AVIC has made with the success of the JL-8/K-8.

yeah, Hongdu is really disappointing me with L-15. And the more embarrassing part is that they can't even develop a basic trainer and have to do co-production with Yakolev. It must have taken a miracle for them to develop K-8s. I still don't know how that happened.

Well we have to remember Hongdu was once Nanchang who created the very useful Q-5 and experimental J-12 fighter but yes, lately, they can't even get a turboprop trainer through the door without Russian help. Ever countries like Iran and Chile can design and manufacture turboprop trainer aircraft themselves.

The L-15 is still on its planned track, which is planned pretty distantly still, I've read a few reports that Hongdu and AVIC have begun advertising the L-15 to other countries for sale but we still have to wait if the AI-222-25F engines which have begun being used by L-15 prototypes can be 'indigenized' (license produced).

more K-8 sales, this one is for 6 to Bolivia. I think we discussed about this before.

It translates to
The Bolivian government authorized the purchase for $ 57.8 million six Chinese combat aircraft to the fight against drug trafficking, after ruling out the acquisition of Czech manufacturing similar ships, reported local media on Friday.

The decree signed by President Evo Morales said that the military equipment will be "a contribution to the regional fight against drug trafficking, ensuring proper control of the national airspace in sensitive areas and affected by this problem," reported the newspaper El Deber.

The Bolivian government decided to purchase the Chinese K-8 aircraft (Karakorum), after denouncing the United States did not authorize the sale Czech Republic to Bolivia the same number of planes, after La Paz last year to expel the ambassador and the U.S. DEA.

Defense Minister Walker San Miguel, Morales announced that the ruling will give details of the purchase on 10 October, to mark the day of the Bolivian Air Force.

Bolivia has no warplanes.

The history went something like this.
Took 8 months to finish the design blueprints.
Took 3 months to finish the module design and build the production tools
Took 3 months to produce the parts assembly
Took 3 months to do final assembly and then the first flight.
In December 2005, it passed AVIC1's design inspection.
(personally, I thought at this point, it was going to join the air force, but ...)
In 2006, GAIG did Improvement work based on suggestions from certification flight testing and new air force requirements..
It took just 2 months to complete the redesign.
In 2007, Shanying project became an official national project (I think that's when you know you will get orders from the air force)
In 2008, it completed alpha testing assembly?
This January, GAIG completed plane reliability certification testing.
The general requirement of aircraft development received approval.
In June, it finished some kind of training program.
Now in late September, after passing technology certification review, Shanying can start mass production.

Now, JJ-9 will start limited production for air force and naval. It will also be GAIG's newest export item (don't ask me, it didn't hint if it had any leads). Either way, this shows that Shanying actually had a major redesign after first conducting testing in 2006. I would imagine that PLA pretty much got the plane that it wanted by now.

Wow, that's pretty extensive, we all knew the scale of this 'redesign' was very radical but I wonder what improvements we don't know about! Also the Shanying project was always pretty vocal on it's 'exportability', to be honest though its certainly too high performance a trainer for the average air force to need on its own. I still think a weaponised fighter variant is what Guizhou has in mind for 'exporting'. On the otherhand, this could be the perfect trainer aircraft to 'package' with the FC-1.
