I was thinking initially they could possibly for different roles (one advanced trainer and one for light fighter/attack, which of course would be a pretty unwieldy but, if they have money to throw around then its their prerogative) but the lack domestic engines could be an even bigger issue.Either they want both or engine issue has thrown a spanner in the works.
That could definitely be a possibility, it certainly wouldn't be the first agreed upon aircraft deal that was cancelled last minute.Until they actually sign the deal, I think there is always chance of them picking something else. Could also be negotiation tactic for china to offer them something else.

L-15 was a political buy anyway. I think it will come through in the end, one way or the other.
