@Hendrik_2000 may I know what community you're in. Most of us here in the Philippine came from Fujian Province most particularly JinJiang and Xiamen.

My ancestor come from Tong An outside Xiamen long long time ago late 19th century Similar to Mestizo in Phillipine but unlike them we don't get assimilated even though we celebrate our Malay heritage in the form of food and clothing we didn't become Malay
@Hendrik_2000 My father came from JingJiang and my mother is a native born from a Chinese parents, so I considered myself a 1st generation Filipino Chinese.
I thought you're a Texan? So you're actually a Chinese ethnic with Malaysian heritage living in Texas. And it's good that you still sees that you're Chinese.
First time I came to China, there were tons of these CJ bikes on the road, with boxer 650cc and 750cc engines. They are often with sidecars, and they are used as pick up, car, daily transportation, bringing farm goods to the market, everything you name it, these things do it. The countryside was filled with these, bubbling and sputtering, along dirty roads. Things were so different then. Today, roads are super clean and smooth, cars are so modern, and what used to be the farmer's workhorse has been scooped by collectors everywhere.
There are modern ones now with more modern engines, but its not like the same thing with the side valve twin boxer.

The tie that bind looking Hainan today people forgot that Hainan use to be the Australia of China where they send convict, disgrace mandarin and official, people condemn by the emperor. But the native majority is Hainanese a branch of Minnan dialect.
Because it was poor place many went to SEA to seek their fortune. for some reason they are the preferred cook for rich peranakan household. so today in Singapore and Malaysia they open shop specializing in peranakan food even when they have nothing to do with peranakan. Anyway many went back to Hainan after accumulating wealth in SEA and built this beautiful architecture home in Haikow the capital of Hainan And become object of tourism

The story of Abe no Nakamaro. He's an Omyoji from the same sect as the later Abe no Seimei. Traveled to the Tang Dynasty to seek knowledge, where he became a member of the Tang court and rubbed shoulders with Tang personages such as the famous poet Li Bai to whom he became a close friend, the consort Yang Guifei known as one of the great beauties of China, and the later seditious general An Lushan. For a while, he also served as the Governor General of Annam (Vietnam) for the Tang Dynasty.
