Chinese depth charge launchers are often confused with anti torpedo decoy launchers, and both functions can be the same device. The fact that such devices are being installed shows there is some grudging (and I mean grudging) progress to that project.

There are two ways to defend against torpedoes; either mask the noise, or provide a bigger juicier target. You can install torpedo decoys by cutting a small hole in the back of the ship as the aperture to let such a decoy run out of. The Russians fitted the Udav-1 anti-submarine system to the Admiral Kuznetsov, which is a rocket-based system which is useful for anti-torpedo defence. If the Chinese are any similar, they also would use a rocket-based system. Therefore, I would actually like to see these pictures and see for myself what they are.

Go check it yourself in the CDF. It wont fit on this forum.

The Chinese use a rocket-mortar based system, which you should have already seen in ships like the 170/171 and the 022s.

Interesting part there, though hard to believe. Fisher cites a HK daily Ta Kung Pao in December (2006) that claims the Shang is only 1.2 decibels noisier than a Seawolf and can dive up to 450m.

Thanks Crobato for the interesting article.

What interests me the most was the last quote on how China is trying to bribe Taiwan into unification. I don't so. I think China is just merging with Taiwan, unofficially. This will prepare the way for official merging.

Already China and Taiwan conduct significant amounts of business, Chinese Americans and Chinese residents in America conduct significant business with China, and lots of overseas Chinese from elsewhere conduct significant business with China. China is also building cultural and educational connections between all these non-mainland Chinese people. All of this is happening at a fast rate. China is unofficially bridging the gap between mainland China and non-mainland Chinese. Once Chinese people are practically reunited, Chinese leaders will officially unite Chinese people.

I am going off topic, but I just wanted to point that out.

Granted, the Song is a different class, but still such information may go some way to explaining how the reports that the Song that popped up near Kitty Hawk last year could simply submerge and disappear in front of them. The PLAN has some surprise trump cards up its sleeve it seems. I wonder what the others may be.

Did you hear the report from US? of cause it's unconfirmed, that reported China research Submarine Electromagnetic propulsion and Electromagnetic gun,the EM gun somebody already mentioned in the forum.
If Song installed EM propulsion,I mean just one is doing a pilot study.last year the tracking Kitty Hawk news, many people discussed the speed, and also this stuff operates quieter.PLA some times do some thing surprise.

I kind of doubt the Song had EM propulsion. An operational sub would not have something this experimental. The system was tried by the Japanese and it was too slow. The system would also be detectable by magnetic anomaly means.

Also created a lot of cavitation... one needs to stop watching The Hunt for Red October...
