Aha! It's an Ohio. The shape, the bulge above the diving plane, and the vertical line below the diving plane confirm it. And the background doesn't really look like China anyway.

About SSK's... anybody have news on a successor to Song / Yuan? It's about time for a new class or variant. Will this one finally be serial produced?

Re: Chinese sub thread

Since the Yuan has gone official this year, along with last year reports the problems have been fixed and a second sub on the way. The production stopped when problems arose in the first sub and may have resumed once the problems were fixed allowing the makers to incorporate changes deep within the sub while still in production, I would assume the Yuan has now entered serial production. We probably should see an initial flotilla of 4 subs first.

Its probably too soon for a Song/Yuan successor. Aside from some development setbacks, the PLAN seems generally satisfied with the type once the problems were done. Even if plans are being made for it right now, we won't hear about those plans for some time to come.

Personally I would like to see China build new subs around the U-212/214 model.

The Yuan production run may stretch to 2 to 3 flotillas. (1 flotilla = 4 subs).

Re: Chinese sub thread

In the PLAN, the 093 is a project, not a class of ships, just as the 052 project, you can see the 052A,052B,052C ships, these are really completely different ships with different size, shape, proposion system, weapons as well as sensors and defence, but still all under the banner of project 052, this is especially the case when it comes to the Chinese navy, you can see the same trend in all major chinese naval project.
So this is why that I don't think the 095 would be merely a improved version of the 093 project, the 095 project might very well be a completely new design or they would have stayed under the 093 project banner with designations like 093A/B/C/D.

That's not true at all, 052 is completed different from 052B/C. The only similarity is that they all use gas turbine. As for 095, it's obvious that it's a completely different design from 093. Nobody is doubting that.

Hmm, think you missunderstood me, I am talking about designations here, the 052B/C is still using 052 instead of a new project number, meaning its a countinuiation and improvement of same project and project team, just like 051B/C.

Well, seems like some ppl think it's a direct continuied improvement over a unsatisfied 093 project, but I think it's rather a completely new one.

it's not the same project. 052B/C are similar enough that you can call the same project. You can't same the same about 052. They are not built in the same ship yard. 052B/C are 75% larger than 052. If anything, 052B/C had a lot more influence in hull from 051B. So, there is no way 052B/C are continuation from 052

They are building a new one, because 093 can't compare to Seawolf or Virginia and most likely a notch below late LA class.

75% larger? Type 052 = 4.800 tons, type 052B/C = 6.500 tons
I hope you ment 25%.

4200 ton standard, 4800 ton full 052C has been mentionned in most of the magazines as 7000 tonne. If you use 4200 ton vs 7000 ton, that's 67% more.

They are all called 052 for a reason, they are not built in same shipyard, but still are all built in Shanghai, cuz the same design team are based in Shanghai, I still believe they are all of one very same project and from same project team, after US sanction over the LM2500 system, china hade to stop LuHu class production, but the project and design improvement is obviously not stopped, just waiting for new propulsion system, change and improvements are expected, thus the hull difference between 052a/b/c.

Anyway, offtopic.

If I remember correctly, all the warships designs are developed in one particular institute. The main difference between 051 and 052 is that one uses steam turbine and the other uses CODOG. That's the difference. Nobody that looks at a 052C and 052 side by side would ever think they are from the same project.
