Re: Chinese sub thread

50 knots, it could be unlikely but not impossible. I wouldn't imagine that it will be going 50 knots normally, but when it's running for its life it is still a possibility.

Re: Chinese sub thread

If it doesn't use a pump jet, and just uses a plain screw, that would make it faster than the pump jet subs like Seawolf. It could push a 35 knot sub past 40 knots, I think. So 40 knots for the Type 093 is not impossible. That said, I'd rather have a quiet pump jet and sacrifice the speed. The Type 093 also looks very hydrodynamic.

It's not clear from the picture if there are any acoustic tiles on the Type 093 right now. If there aren't tiles, they can fit them and get a huge decrease in sound. Then change the propulsion to a pump jet. The two added together may be able to decrease a 130 dB sub to a 115 dB sub. Then if you are smart enough to fiddle with the reactor and other noisy components, you can squeeze it down to 110 dB.

That is comparable to a Seawolf or an Ohio ~105 dB.

Here are some more pictures of the model.

A well built and maintained nuclear powerpalnt should be able to mantain it's full flank(top) speed indefinitely.

It's just to hard to believe taht this sub can go this fast for the reasons I stated above. And>>> Why would the PLAN reveal the top speed of it's prize posession?

I read that article. All I can say is this, don't accept those numbers as officials. Those numbers are just basically based on what have been mentionned on the web. They are not official, but just repeat of figures that we've seen before.

The model is not of the 093 but the modified Han class. The PLA is admitting not just one class of SSN but two.

In what sense do you mean? You've said before that PLAN is not satisfied with current Type 093. I've also heard that sentiment from other places. The obvious explanation is that Type 093 is not quiet enough.

The way PLAN seems to work is to keep making improved variants. The existing two subs are probably 093 and 093A. So when is 093B going to come out, and will successfully reduce its noise?

Will it have a pump jet?

well, they can't possibly be satisfied with it in the long run, but that's what the next generation of SSN is for. And that one is termed as 095. There are a couple of problems I have.
1) that link you posted contains nothing about the 50 knots and such (that I can see)
2) I have seen someone posting something like that in another forum, but that seems to be rehashing of several old 093 speculations that I posted a while back. I really don't think PLAN is willing to give out this kind of sensitive data.

As for propeller technology, that would have to be the last thing they let you see.

I have saw a show on TV before that said the US nuclear powered carriers could go 60 knots easily. But I don't see the carriers going that fast almost never. I understand the nuclear power plant can supply high power indefinitely but there are other stress that can be created going high speed all the time. Plus, it will never cruise at its top speed. I have never seen a ship cruising at top speed for any long period of time.
