In terms of the number of vessels owned, China is the world’s largest shipowning nation.

It was in August last year that China surpassed Greece as the world’s largest merchant fleet in gross tonnage (gt) terms.

China needs way more RORO ships, just to catch up with Korea and Japan.

Also the very need for those RORO ships to be adopted for contingencies involving certain islands in the southeastern and eastern directions.

China definitely needs to procure lots more RORO ships. They are pretty much militia-type LPDs and LSTs.
Japan leads RORO ships is understandable as they were the leading automobile exporter up until now. decades of domination. same with Korea.. China just begun their journey so definitely in near future biggest growth will be in RORO category as BYD gearing up and other companies as well..

RORO isn’t car carriers. They have their own category. (Vehicle carriers)
these are the ROROs they are talking about.

posted by the Shanghai Maritime University states that the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics has been contracted to provide radiation testing service on steel used for a certain heavy icebreaker.

[Single Source Procurement Announcement] Neutron and Gamma-ray Radiation Testing Service on Marine Steel BX2023186

Purchasing party: Shanghai Maritime University;

Procurement project name: marine steel neutron + gamma-ray nuclear radiation test service;

Procurement content: test service;

Purchase budget amount: RMB 110,000;

Supplier: Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences;

Reasons for single-source procurement:

The project "Performance Assessment of Marine Steel for Heavy Icebreakers (2023)" involves nuclear irradiation testing of materials, and the "nuclear irradiation" test requires neutron gamma mixed irradiation test: the cumulative neutron injection is higher than 2×1014n/cm2, and the gamma dose is higher than 3×105 rad . Since Shanghai Maritime University does not have the necessary expertise and equipment, the only insitution in China that can meet the test requirements is the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Therefore, the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics has been declared the single-source provider of the "nuclear irradiation" test.

Public announcement starting and ending time: 2023.11.7-2023.11.13;

Any supplier, unit or individual who has any objection to this single-source procurement method may feedback the written comments to the purchasing unit during this publicity period.
