CSIS article on PLAN updates

This was posted in the PLAN thread already but I wanted to link it here too since the Jiangnan shipyard is dual use, and despite being CSIS the article is a pretty excellent summary of the shipyard's past and present expansion efforts.

Also, they got a methanol fuel system developed domestically also. Already got 10 orders. This is why it's going to be hard for your traditional marine propulsion producers. We got a new tech here and it's unlikely China will be behind here so Chinese shipyards are just going to pick domestic sources over time

Nuclear-powered container ships are on the horizon.

Jiangnan shipyard has unveiled the design of a large (24000 TEU) nuclear-powered container ship. According to

, the ship is powered by molten-salt reactor(s).

This central enterprise shipyard released the world's largest nuclear power tank ship - Shipping Online Information Network

On December 5, Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd., officially released the world's first and world's largest 24000TEU nuclear-powered container ship design at the 2023 China International Maritime Technology Symposium and Exhibition. This marks that Jiangnan Shipbuilding has made revolutionary achievements in the field of "zero-emission" ship type research and development, and further expands the company's container ship series brand.

At the launch ceremony, the DNV Classification Society issued the principle recognition (AiP) certificate of the ship to Jiangnan Shipbuilding.

It is understood that in order to meet the requirements of climate change for energy conservation and emission reduction, Jiangnan Shipbuilding took the initiative to explore the tank ship type and power system scheme, use nuclear energy as a clean energy, adopt the internationally advanced fourth-generation reactor molten salt reactor solution, and put forward the design of an ultra-large nuclear energy container ship to transport it. "Zero emissions" are truly achieved during the operation cycle.

The ship has high safety, high temperature and low pressure operation of the reactor, avoids core melting in principle, and has the characteristics of non-proliferation and inherent safety. The ship does not need to be resistant to high-pressure containers and pipelines. Even if there is a rupture accident, it will quickly solidify at ambient temperature. After the accident, in addition to the normal means of stopping the reactor, the fuel salt can also be discharged out of the reactor to achieve rapid stoppage to prevent the accident expansion.

The ship-type power device is arranged in the safe position of the ship. The power system adopts a double-sided redundant design to fully ensure the safety of the power supply system and has the function of emergency evacuation from the personnel gathering area.

The main scale of the ship is suitable for the owner's operation scenario, and it is more compact than the layout of the traditional ship-type power system, which can provide more box space. It also cancels the traditional chimney machine cabin and adopts the first cabin scheme. The nuclear power cabin is located in the cabin, which not only increases the cabin space but also improves comfort and safety. The

The whole ship adopts a full-electric scheme, and the propulsion system adopts dual-motor, double-axle paddle and double rudder, with high installed power, high speed and good maneuverability. Its main power supply is a supercritical carbon dioxide generator set. The nuclear electric power system adopts a compact modular design, and the power system is highly efficient, which can achieve real "net zero" emissions. Compared with low-sulfur oil and various alternative energy solutions, the ship can achieve shorter captains, more tank positions, and improved space utilization and energy utilization.

In addition, the ship also adopts a convenient and fast "battery" replacement scheme, replacing the "battery" every 10 years without worrying about green fuel price fluctuations and filling.

A really bad idea. If it was a PWR it would have been fine. But a molten salt reactor has several issues when used on a ship. Sodium ignites in contact with water, and if the reactor needs to be shut down for whatever reason, the sodium solidifies, and then you have to melt it to get the reactor working again.
