Chinese shipbuilding industry

Xiang Yun Kou is a flo/flo ship, float on/float off. The largest operator of such ships is a Dutch ship owner called Dockwise.
I was wondering when China would enter this field.

Do you guys think Chinese shipbuilding industry is more advanced than the Russian one ? I believe it is the case .... perhaps the engine is still the achilles heel of Chinese ... apart from that Chinese shipbuilding industry is far more advanced

Chinese shipbuilding is way more advanced than the Russian ones. Russian shipbuilding industry can't even build ships for its military on time, let alone taking on civilian orders. It's in sorry state.

One thing tphuang. How indigenous is china´s shipbuilding tech?

I mean, take a look at this. I posted it on the AC thread and was told it was outdated, but i would like to see your opinion. Its from 2008

... Dude it's like over 60 pages... Just give a summary or something.

And what do you mean by "how" indigenous? Apart from engines I don't think there's any challenge on that matter... Unless you're claiming imported ore or something used to make the hull lol...

I'm too lazy to read that, but I think they still have a way to go. They are definitely making more and more of it indigenous, but they still have some areas like engines and propellers that they are relying on licensed production of foreign products.

I wonder why they havent been able to move in on the cruise ship business or the smaller yards specialising in building luxury boats for the filthy rich?

I think you got it wrong the report is outdated not the Chinese shipping industry

Another thing why is the obsession with indigeneous design. Why bother reinventing the wheel, when you can get licence built . I don't think there is any shame in doing it . Basically there are only 2 original marine engine builder. Sulzer a Swiss company based in Winthertur and Man .You can add Pielstick. Everybody else built licence copy from them including Japanese,Korean and other European shiyard

today there are many engine makers. And the question "why indigenous" can be answered in that one day the USA can pressure those countries where this companies are located, to not sell engines/propellers anymore to china. Thats why. In terms of military tech, china must thrive to be 100% indigenous, like the USSR. Only then you will be a true independent military power, not beholden to someon else tech.
