Total investment of 5 billion yuan! Northern Special Gas Silicon-based New Materials and Third-generation Semiconductor Materials Integration Project Started.

Zhoushan High-tech Zone held a ceremony to start the construction of key projects in 2024 and the Northern Special Gas Project.

The Northern Special Gas Project has a total investment of 5 billion yuan and an output value of 10 billion yuan after completion. It is a strategic project to break through the "bottleneck" of electronic-grade silane special gas manufacturing; at the same time, there are Changyang CPI major projects (annual production of 1 million square meters of polyimide film projects), as well as Minglong new energy vehicle parts, Zhonghao space capsules, Zhongzhan precision canning equipment, Minbo energy-saving equipment, Zhongbang intelligent food machinery and equipment, Wellman cryogenic equipment, Zhiting sweeping robot parts, Best energy-saving power distribution control equipment and other manufacturing projects with a value of more than 100 million yuan. These projects are highly matched with the industrial orientation of the park, laying a solid foundation for the high-tech zone to cultivate new quality productivity, enhance new momentum for high-quality development, and enhance the competitiveness of industrial clusters.

Nvidia is on course to sell $12bn worth of artificial intelligence chips in China this year despite US export controls that have throttled its business in one of the world’s biggest semiconductor markets. The $3tn Silicon Valley group will over the coming months deliver more than 1mn of its new H20 chips, which are designed to fall outside of US restrictions on selling AI processors to Chinese customers, according to analyst forecasts. That figure is almost twice as many as Huawei is expected to sell of its China-made rival product, Ascend 910B, according to estimates from SemiAnalysis, a chip consultancy.
Emphasis mine. It is kind of interesting how they wrote made a whole article based on just guesstimates.

Do you have any better numbers than those guestimates? Or any reason to believe that those estimates are wrong?

The HBM chips themselves are not directly subject to U.S. export controls. But only three companies make HBMs—SK Hynix and Samsung Semiconductor in South Korea, and Micron Technology in the U.S. All three use U.S.-made equipment to produce HBM chips, and since 2020 the U.S. government has barred Huawei from purchasing computer chips manufactured using American technology.

Huawei’s Ascend chips are considered an alternative to Nvidia’s GPUs. But demand for Ascend chips far outstrips supply; one reason for the shortfall is a shortage of HBMs, according to one of the people close to Huawei.

Last I checked a fab takes years to ramp up - and it's been 2 weeks since that article. The Information article made a specific reference to the supply bottleneck for HBM for Huawei today. It said nothing about what this situation will look like in 1 or 2 or 3 years.

Additionally, do you have any evidence to suggest that Ascend 910B is not supply constrained? I.E are you arguing that there are mountains of 910Bs lying around without customers?

I think hbm is a concern for at least the next year.

not saying that article is a good article. hBM has always been a concern. Not a recent thing.

and I would just disregard any prediction from Dylan Patel on how many A20s nvidia can sell.

btw, ai chips is a major bubble right now

Then the new SMIC Beijing FAB will have a 14nm and 7nm domestic line just as we speculated, thanks Professor, this is big news indeed as we may see Shanghai concentrate on producing advance 7nm and 5nm chips while Beijing improve on their yield in 7nm node process and mass produce its 14nm.
