Further de risking from Chinese OEMs in CMOS

Looks like omnivision is coming out with better products than Sony soon. It has already gotten more orders than it can handle from xiaomi and will get more soon from Huawei.

As people have said, Chinese supply chain is turning into quite the monster

From one of the main bloggers, OV50K is going to be a little delays.
The current high end OV50H is high in demand. So far, just Xiaomi and HW use them, but going forward, all the other 5 like Honor, Vivo & Oppo will use them and Meizu has started testing.

This is the growth of Chinese supply chain.

Domestic CIS, OLED screens, batteries, frames, driver chips, RF chips & ultrasonic scanners.

ASML China Export Curbs Came Too Late, Dutch PM Frontrunner Says

The U.S. can count on full Dutch cooperation on its semiconductor curbs against China, if the latest words from the Netherlands' likely future leader are an indication:

Asked about the incoming export restrictions after it became clear existing measures have been insufficient to prevent China from from working out how to manufacture the most advanced semiconductors, Yesilgoz-Zegerius said, “it was probably better if we had taken them before.”

Her statements put her at odds with some Dutch politicians, including lawmakers from two parties in the ruling coalition, who called for their government to take a stand against the measures.

“Unilaterally changing the rules during a contest where competitiveness and strategic autonomy are at stake is difficult to accept, even by a good ally,” said the Dutch Christian Democrat lawmaker Mustafa Amhaouch, who worked for ASML earlier in his career.

Yes, there are a few Dutch politicians who oppose the U.S. measures imposed on them, but China cannot count on the Netherlands.

The entire genome sequencing race is between America and China with the exception of Oxford nanopore which will probably get acquired by one of the US company. Although it's a small market currently (~ $4 billion globally) but including BGI there seems to be at least 10 world class Chinese start-ups.

ASML China President: China already has nearly 1,400 ASML machines

According to Jiwei.com, according to Titanium Media, ASML Global Vice President and China President Shen Bo said in an interview that by the end of 2023, ASML’s installed capacity of photolithography machines and measurement machines in China will be close to 1,400 units.

Shen Bo said that ASML's global net sales reached 21.2 billion euros last year, and it is expected that the company's global sales will increase by 30% in fiscal year 2023, reaching more than 27 billion euros. According to ASML's latest quarterly report, the global semiconductor industry will stabilize next year. It is expected that by 2025, the production capacity of existing wafer fabs will increase and new wafer fabs will be put into use. The semiconductor equipment industry will usher in relatively large growth and usher in a "climax" of demand.

Shen Bo revealed, "Our current judgment on our production capacity is to have a production capacity of 500-600 deep ultraviolet (DUV) equipment per year by the end of 2025 or early 2026."

It is reported that ASML currently has 16 offices, 12 warehousing and logistics centers, 3 development centers, 1 training center and 1 maintenance center in China. ASML's total number of employees in mainland China has exceeded 1,600.

RISC-V. Wonder how this will play out?

The whole idea is retarded. The specification is open, it is an open standard, anyone can implement it. The idea of possible US sanctions is only hurting US companies in this space. For example StarFive, which makes RISC-V core designs for other companies to make SoCs, recently fired 20% of their staff and are going to move those positions to India partly because of this.
T-head, a division of Alibaba, also already has RISC-V cores which are more than competitive with those of StarFive. And they even open sourced a lot of them. You can find the Verilog on Github.

A lot of client companies which make SoCs were already using non-US core designs in part because they expected these sorts of sanctions. The RISC-V Foundation, which publishes the specification, was moved from the US to Switzerland because they expected this. And now with this discussion by the US government these trends will only accelerate.

In other words ASML will dump their low end machines into China with the intention of undermining any potential development of a lithography industry in China. Of course they are restricted selling their high end machines which also could undermine the overall development of the Chinese semiconductor industry. And to make things worse NONE of these "mature" machines are manufactured or even assembled in China, so this machines could basically be subject to export controls from other countries if the US decide to strangle mature nodes also. Mr Shen sounds like used car salesman here, all the good, none of the downside, a great guy overall and everyone is ok with it.

My hot take is that after China lithography supply chain is completed ASML should be given the option to either find a way sell their best tools in China or sell nothing.

Do you mean by SiFive?

StarFive is the one in China

SiFive is actually the one likely mostly impacted by this.

Most recently, Milk-V's boards uses their P670 core

Not something I'm going to actively advertise, since I don't want to contribute to people cutting Milk-V off SiFive designs
