If A800 ban is true, then I am still baffled on how Alibaba/Tencent could not see this coming. Wake up people... We need a modern day Xi'an incident for a united front within tech. Thankful, US govt is helping this along by giving Alibaba/Tencent no other options except to Ascend together @Zeek

Huawei should spin off it's Ascend AI business as a separate entity if it means getting Alibaba/Tencent to go all-in.

It is that expression, "you go to war with the army have, and not the army you wished you had."

Nvidia has the better product, that GPU.

They need the best product they can get their hands on, because the AI boom is happening right now. Like right now!

So Alibaba, Tencent, TikTok, will get the best chip to stay in the AI race.

What choice do they have?

They can wait until the Chinese AI chip products mature, then join the AI race.

No one is going to do that.

The big Chinese company has to get into the AI ring right now for the fight. Go with the best.

Then later, rip it out, lol.

Business problems, usually are solved over time. Hence, a problem usually is not solved at once, more like two parts or a three part solution.

Stay in the game, be at the cutting edge of the AI revolution which is just starting.

Then replace those Americans chips later.

To wait for the Chinese AI super-chip to appear, and not to get into the AI race today while they wait, is not an option.

That article probably misunderstood or misquotd the TechInsight guy. If you actually read the TechInsight report, it would be aligned with what I said.

There's clues to the misquote or misunderstanding. For example, CXMT never called their G1 as 21nm, they called it 19nm. It's TechInsight and industry that called CXMT's G1 as 21 or 22nm. It's clear that the article some how flipped flopped what CXMT claimed and what TechInsight found G1 to be.
The text is straightforward, impossible for misquote.

Some big tech companies are already using Huawei's Atlas solution to train LLMs. Training a LLM requires a huge cluster of GPU/NPU, so the challenge is no longer just single card performance, also how to manage so many nodes. And Huawei offer a all-in-one solution.

Ascend's single card performance may be lower than H800/H100, but Huawei is a powerhouse in network and communication. So it can create a system on par with Nvidia solution.
For example, Huawei's Atlas Supercluster, this system can handle training of a 1000B parameters model.

Shouxin Semiconductor Thin Film Deposition Equipment Project Starts

Yesterday morning, the opening ceremony of Shouxin Semiconductor Thin Film Deposition Equipment Project was held in Jiangyin High-tech Zone, adding new achievements in strengthening and extending the chain of Jiangyin's integrated circuit industry. Xu Feng, member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Jiangyin Municipal Party Committee, announced the start of the project.
As the first major semiconductor equipment project introduced in Jiangyin, the Shouxin Semiconductor Thin Film Deposition Equipment Project will build a headquarters base in Jiangyin High-tech Zone that integrates the research and development, production and sales of high-end semiconductor front-end process thin film deposition equipment. The project is scheduled to be put into production in June 2024. After reaching production, it will achieve annual invoice sales revenue of 600 million yuan, injecting strong new momentum into the high-quality development of the integrated circuit industry in Jiangyin and even Wuxi.
It is reported that from the first negotiation in January to the formal signing in February, the Shouxin Semiconductor Thin Film Deposition Equipment Project completed the registration and filing, obtained the land and started construction in the year of signing, exceeding the "Jiangyin speed" of project construction and fully demonstrating the Jiangyin High-tech Zone Firm determination to accelerate the implementation of the "Core Chain Plan" in the integrated circuit industry. Currently, the "innovation chain" of the integrated circuit industry in the park is accelerating upgrading, and a number of high-level R&D platforms have been built, including the Jiangyin Integrated Circuit Design Innovation Center and the National Engineering Laboratory for High-density Integrated Circuit Packaging and Testing, to promote the integrated circuit industry to accelerate the release of newer technologies. Multiple new productivity

Does it matter since Japan has already aligned itself with the US to ban the export of high-end semi equipment?
