"Without US sanctions, China's semiconductor industry would probably have continued on its old path as a pure chip equipment buyer, manufacturing for others," Lin said.

Other speakers backed Lin's remarks, saying that despite the tough environment, US sanctions had handed domestic equipment suppliers an opportunity, even in areas that have not had to face restrictions.

"We had a prolonged [period] whereby Chinese chip design firms wouldn't opt to tape-out in domestic fabs, with fabs not willing to use domestic equipment, and domestic equipment firms not buying parts from domestic parts suppliers," said Zheng Guangwen, chairman of Shenyang Fortune Precision Equipment.

"However, facing an existential threat from foreign sanctions, the whole industry has come together to work more closely."

...because of premature self-defeatist attitude like this:

Why Huawei didn't see this coming?
Because Huawei preferred Western products and was avoiding local alternatives. Huawei founder Ren Zhenfei would buy iPhones as gifts for his family over Huawei phones because of the prestige ,values and the admirations he had for US and Canada. Hopefully the family attitudes have moved on from the sanctions and kidnapping.

Sometimes the national interest/security doesn't pay the bills so a balance is needed. In the business world you have to be competitive or die, Huawei doesn't only have to compete against others Chinese companies but also with international companies that are as aggressive or even more as they are, is a jungle, all of that while fighting a technological guerrilla warfare against uncle sam, granted much like in the second Indochina wars they are receiving as much support from the government as possible but still is tough fight.
I don't think a lot of Chinese see Huawei as a national hero but more like image of a more competitive/advance China and now I think is more a symbol of resistance against a more powerful power.
My critique against Huawei and many others in China is why they didn't see this coming and prepare themselves for the storm? Huawei considered getting into semiconductors manufacturing almost a decade ago but they decide against, they didn't localize their supply chain until the last moment, back in the day Huawei and their bosses pretty much where the most industrialist trade liberal pro-globalization Chinese company ever. The US destroyed all that with the stroke of a pen and now the Chinese government has to intervine to lend some support to them.
I think they know it, 2016-2018 they redirected their investment to Mainland... they are a profit-driven company, it wasn't until the storm hit that they turned it in the right direction... other companies should also prepare.... the era of electric vehicle competition and AI will be a new fad for China and Huawei

Sir, I often ask where is Apple I-car? the hype surrounding its appearance had died down and for me it's a big mistake as revenue from selling smartphone will decrease dramatically due to the incoming economic recession. They had a huge war chest to invest BUT maybe because of Tesla and Chinese EV manufacturer plus the lackluster sales of Lucid and Rivian, they have a major rethink.

Smartphone is already very good, even the cheap ones ... won't be long becoming a commodity

You can do 99% of you you need even with $200 phone, yeahhh perhaps the camera is not as good as the $800, but doesn't really matter for most 99% people

But of course there is a niche market for a brand like Apple, but just too expensive for most people

it is an affordable luxury like LV. so people will keep buying it once every year or once every 2 years despite the cost increase

how do I know where is Apple car, but they are working on it, maybe it will come out sooner than 2030

Looks like this was a pretty healthy earnings report

capex increased to $1.7B and $3B in total in first half. Let's see if that goes up even more in Q3 to get last minute ASML deliveries and for advanced process deliveries from domestic fabs

R&D increased from $168m to $178m. Still seem a little low for me

I will be listening to earnings call again
