for many RF and power devices there are entire films which are GaN. There's even entire GaAs wafers.Umm, I thought GaN is the doping material, so it wouldn't "replace" silicon, right?

I fully agree here.
What we are witnessing now is just the tip of the iceberg, a small piece in a far bigger and complex puzzle. A single step in a long term and deep plan that China must have already analyzed in detail, with a lot of what-if conditions and a lot of plan-b fallback, because they bit the bullet and there is no turning back now.
My two cent bet is that US will double down with sanctions.
US politicians of both parties will happily jump on the react-to-China bandwagon. Just one year before the elections and after US citizens have been "pumped up" for years with anti-china propaganda, now it's the time to reap the benefits. I'm not inclined to hope that US politicians have a view, a vision beyond these basic and short-term political goals...at the end of the they believe that any problem may araise can always be fixed printing more money.
OTH I'm also inclined to think that if China did this, they evaluated to be self-reliant enough, so may be this is an indirect hint for us in this forum that SMEE DUVi litho machine is developing well. It' impossible they did this withouth considering the effect of a total ban on ASML as a retaliation.
SMIC is their biggest customer!
The leading CMP equipment in Beijing is on the market! The second phase of the big fund participated in the investment

Jingyi Jingwei was established on September 23, 2019. The legal representative is Jing Cui, the controlling shareholder is 45 , the actual controller is China Electronics Technology Group , and the second phase of the Big Fund is its fifth largest shareholder. In the past three years, Jingyi Jingwei's cumulative revenue was approximately 825 million yuan, and its cumulative net profit was approximately 133 million yuan. The company is currently the only equipment supplier in China that has achieved overseas batch sales of 8-inch chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) equipment. It has launched the first 8-inch CMP production line mass production equipment with independent intellectual property rights in China , and some clients are 100% imported. Product substitution breaks the long-term monopoly of international manufacturers and fills the gap in the operation of domestic 8-inch CMP equipment in the chip manufacturing line. Its 12-inch CMP equipment has completed process verification in the 28nm process international mainstream integrated circuit production line , and the equipment performance and technical indicators can meet the requirements of the customer's production line; it has received orders from many customers. At the same time, Jingyiwei seized the development opportunities of the third-generation semiconductors and launched a domestic 6/8-inch compatible CMP equipment, which can be used for special-demand surface polishing processes including third-generation semiconductor materials such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride.
Joint venture with SMEE that focuses on producing lithography machines with a focus on 100% Chinese components or GTFO.
If the goal is to stop cloud providers from offering computing services using nvidia GPU's to Chinese end users, you would have to go after pretty much every cloud provider in existence since technically anyone with the skills can buy those GPUs, setup some servers outside of China, load the software stack and rent it out. Going after AWS and Azure won't do, it would have to be something along of the lines of no cloud providers who buy nvidia GPU's can rent to Chinese end users which would be super clunky. Even if you do that, there's nothing stopping someone in China from paying someone offshore to train and compile the model offshore and then send it back. We are getting into six degrees of separation territory now.
Who is stupid enough to buy that equipment when a local counterpart in the form of SMEE SSA 800 28nm is available. Please note a duvl that is capable of doing 28nm chip. ASML can't have its cake and eat it too, Like I said from my previous post, anything below NXT 2000i is not good enough and maybe next year with the advent of SSA 900 22nm DUVL, even NXT 2000i can't hack it, ASML need to sell a comparable equipment in NXT 2050i or the window for selling Their DUVL will closed permanently.
Does this mean the actual NXT:1980 is already in the recent ban? Or ASML expects it to be banned soon. Earlier reports said the ban would start from NXT:2000iASML may release a variant of its TWINSCAN NXT:1980 DUV lithography tools that prohibits its Chinese customers from transitioning to sub-28nm process manufacturing
