SMIC struggling to obtain EUV litho equipment

China's SMIC is struggling to obtain crucial EUV lithography equipment for the development of its sub-7nm process technologies, and will be seeking a dialogue with ASML with the help of its newly-appointed vice chairman, according to industry observer

China IC foundry output to continue growth in 2021, says Digitimes Research

China's IC industry will register another growth in output next year, driven by the country's efforts in boosting its IC self-sufficiency, as well as international chipmakers' intention of expanding their factory sites locally in China, according to Digitimes Research.

In addition to China-based pure-play foundries, such as SMIC and HLMC, China-based IDM and memory foundries all have plans to not only optimize production efficiency but also build new production lines in 2021, said

. IDMs such as GTA Semiconductor and SiEn (Qingdao) Integrated Circuit will have additional 8-inch fab capacity come online next year.

IC design houses GalaxyCore and Maxscend Microelectronics are building their production lines in-house that will come online in 2021, Digitimes Research indicated. More China-based fabless firms are looking to grow their manufacturing capability to comply with the country's efforts to boost self-sufficiency in semiconductors.

International chipmakers including Samsung and SK Hynix all intend to expand their factory sites locally in China, with additional production capacities set to go online in 2021.

But there are concerns about capital shortages and trade sanctions imposed by the US, which may disrupt the development of China's homegrown IC sectors. The escalating US-China trade disputes have brought uncertainty to SMIC's capacity expansion plan, for instance.

Hi ansy1968,

Wow brother! Like ... holy whatever!

This was a real bottleneck in the Chinese IC industry.

See ya later!

Wonder what the price will be compared to the Japanese product.

Wonder if there will be buyers in Korea or Taiwan.

Got to borrow this and post it around the internet! Thanks!

:D

Hi horse,

Remember the dismissive attitude of the Western media when NATA reports that they successfully develop a ARF photoresist months ago, questioning the quality of their product. Well now the result are in and its comparable with the best Japan can offer hehehe, bro I know Xmas is around the corner but it's a gift that keeps on giving  . 2020 is a year to forget, but for China IC development, it's a year to be celebrated...;)

Hi Wangxi,

forget about it , ASML will not sell their EUVL to SMIC ever until SMEE develop it's own period.

Anybody knew the problem SMIC face specially the need for EUVL and other tools for the development of 7nm tech and below. With the sanction they need to think outside of the box for a solution while waiting for the local equipment to arrive (SMEE EUVL) and mature. For me that's were the internal politics between Mr Jiang and Mr Liang comes in. Both are proud and strong men and both wish to contribute to the growth of SMIC.

Mr Jiang chiplet tech proposal posted by WTAN intrigues me, if successful develop, he may upstage Mr Liang accomplishment with a working 3nm chips using current equipment, circumventing the need of an expensive and under sanction EUVL.

I'm pretty sure chiplets is not dependent on nm procedure?
its more a yield improving technique right?

From what I gathered about chiplets you can increase the yield by fabbing smaller cpu block, gpu, memory as chiplets and later integrate them into a bigger SOC. Instead of fabbing one big SOC in one go where too many block might have error and need to be discarded.

Hi BlackWindMnt,

Thanks bro, learned a lot, here is another video, explaining the rift, most of it is pertaining to how to move forward. One wish to stay the course while the other need to think outside of the box. Both for me can be done simultaneously, maybe MASSIVE EGO do played a part.

SMIC will open the curtain of reform? Jiang & Liang is only the appearance. Extreme pressure is key!

I think China really make a big mistake... Instead making a chip, they made useless 5g and AI until they forget to make a chip. This is a big mistake. Without proper chip, all 5g and AI will become useless..Chip is a brain, without it nothing can work not just phone but drone, satellite,AI, car and such.. Now, USA has the power and reason to block all chip and other semiconductor equipment to China.. If Trump really want to show truest president power, what can stop trump to impose and block all chip to china.. Xiaomi , BBK electronic will turn to dust soon and become irrelevant.. China government need to start pouring hundred billion to semiconductor industry and start making euv now..Not focus on Moon landing bullshit!!!!

Hi Annihilation98,

Chill bro, It's being worked out, you're right about chips, we are on a catch up mode being a late comer due to Mao's cultural revolution. But I may disagree with you big time regarding 5G and AI. Here we had a chance to out race the US, cause it's a new tech and all of us start at ZERO. The Semiconductor is our vulnerability only in the higher nodes like 7nm and 5nm, If you follow this thread we had master the local production of 28nm tech which 5G and AI used. And next year (2021) will be better the local mass production of 14nm chips and then 7nm by 2023.It all sound to optimistic, but China never failed to surprises.

Also the need wasn't as urgent for chip then for predictable and safe communication supplies, I think bringing ZTE to their knees was a sputnik moment for China. This is serious once if they keep blocking rival chinese companies from getting semi conductors china will never break out of the middle income trap.

I really do think "He who controls high tech, controls who becomes a high income nation over a long time period", the moment Hisilicon started rivalling Qualcomm it was not about human rights anymore but it become about IP theft.
