The following video describe the current status on Loongson and Phytium FeiTeng CPU chips. Loongson uses MIPS instruction set and Phytium FeiTeng uses SPARC instruction set. The latest Loongson CPU chip is fabricated at 28nm. The latest Phytium FeiTeng CPU chip is fabricated at 16nm.

Is it possible that the Huawei 28nm OLED driver chip was made by a third party foundry (i.e. TSMC, SMIC?)?

Though if that were the case, then they should have been taped out months before, and be in production already (since 28nm should be pretty mature, and it probably wouldn't take HiSilicon that long to design a 28nm chip).
Hi Skywatcher, gelgoog

More likely Shanghai Huali, they're assisting Huawei in their 45nm FABS with likely assistance from SMIC ?

"Among others, Thomas Friedman, a columnist for the New York Times, said during a recent online forum that China intends to build an entire microchip supply chain from end to end."

Of course people will say China is monopolizing, but obviously since USA wants to exploit any hole China has in the supply chain, China has no choice but to take control of the entire chain. Honestly we have to thank 川建国 for it. Comrade Trump helped expose China's weaknesses in the semiconductor industry. Thank you, Trump!

Hi TAM,

Your right about Huawei and Here is the proof, Huawei will had the FAB to produce their own chips.

Huawei's first chip plant topped out, accelerating its own R&D and manufacturing efforts-cnTechPost

The main building of Huawei's first chip plant, the FAB2 project at the Huawei Optics Factory in Wuhan, built by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp. Ltd., was successfully completed and topped out on November 30, the construction company said today.
The project, with a total construction area of 208,900 square meters, includes the FAB production facility, CUB power station, PMD software factory and other supporting facilities.

It is Huawei's largest R&D base in the central region, with an optical capability center and an intelligent terminal R&D center.
Upon completion, the project will be put into production as Huawei's first domestic chip plant, mainly for the production of Huawei's self-developed optical communication chips and modules, realizing the complete industry chain from chip design to manufacturing, packaging and testing and delivery to the consumer market.
As of the end of June 2019, Huawei disclosed five projects under construction, including the Huawei Cloud Data Center project in Gui'an, Huawei Gangtou talent apartment project, Suzhou R&D project, Huawei Songshan Lake Terminal Project Phase II and Songshan Lake Huawei Training Academy.

At the time, Huawei said it planned to build the Shanghai Qingpu R&D and the Wuhan Hisilicon factory project (the Wuhan Huawei Optical Factory Project), with total investments of RMB 10.985 billion and RMB 1.8 billion, respectively.

As the world's leading company in the communications equipment market, Huawei has long been deploying optical chips, a core component in the field of optical communications.
As early as 2012, Huawei acquired CIP, a British photonic integration company, followed by the acquisition of Caliopa, a Belgian developer of silicon optical technology, in 2013. Through these two acquisitions, Huawei officially entered the optical communication chip market.
To date, Huawei has been investing in optical communication chips for six years and has been able to achieve self-sufficiency in some of its products.
Huawei has self-production capabilities in many fields such as optical chips (including 25G EML), modulators, SiP, DSP, etc., and has also mastered the world's leading 800G optical chip technology.

Hi WTAN,

WOW !!! How many FABS is under construction for Huawei? Aside from this one there is one in Shanghai, Dongguan and another in Beijing. Gov't should support Huawei instead of wasting resources to Tsinghua Unigroup.

When 5nm production is mastered, what's to stop China from launching a salvo of missiles at TSMC's fabs in taiwan? Especially since TSMC is now going to exclusively provide chips to Apple and not to Chinese companies?
Or more specifically, place sanctions on TSMC chips so Apple will then have to abandon TSMC chips for Chinese chips if it wants to stay in China.
Hi hashtagpls,

Come on man calm down, Taiwan people is our compatriot and TSMC is our crown jewel, I'm saying this as a Chinese. SMIC CEO Liang Mong Song is a Taiwanese , his research and talent had got us up to 7nm chips. TSMC produce a lot of talents that is being hired by China, its contribution to Chinese tech industries is immense. We may had our differences, but being the same ethnicity we can settle it peacefully by ourselves.

Or more specifically, place sanctions on TSMC chips so Apple will then have to abandon TSMC chips for Chinese chips if it wants to stay in China.

I'm not a betting man, but I think if SMEE can able to bring it's EUVL online, TSMC will invest another FAB in China. they will invest where the money is.

Zhang Rujing a Taiwanese compatriot sacrifice his career and fame in TSMC to establish SMIC China first modern FABS. Enduring hardship, scorned and sometimes being threaten, but he persist. Truly a great man deserving our thanks and gratitude.
