Ferrotec is not indigenous. That's not good enough.
You would be surprise how some companies ended becoming "Chinese" just because the majority of their operations was in China and could even happen in the future if trade tensions increase, some Americans companies like LAM, KLA or Applied Materials could create Chinese administrated shell companies to reasearch and manufacture equipment exclusive for the Chinese market.

Ferrotec also used to be American, as Ferrofluidics, founded in 1968, then bought out by their Japanese subsidiary in 1987.

Whose to say that Ferrotec won't be bought out by their Chinese subsidiary and HQed in China?

There are a bunch of companies founded in America by Chinese immigrants whose primary operations are in China. If you know what this community looks like you’d have a sense for how most of them feel about technological development for China.

Small comfort until all these Chinese founders start independently indigenous analogs in China which will not be subject to any possible US sanctions. Lam Research's founder is also ethnic Chinese, but is apparently living it up in North America.

Ideally, there should be indigenous counterparts capable of making all the imported components. It's not safe enough to rely on Chinese-founded foreign companies unless they are ready to switch allegiance when sanctions hit.

well it wasn't founded by Chinese, just taken over by a Chinese CEO. HQ doesn't matter, what matters is operational sites and R&D sites, because those can be confiscated, and they know it.
