Will everything be figured out just in time for the second Trump presidency?
This is big. Huawei is learning step by step everything in the semiconductor industry. They've approached this from both ends: from the front end and removed from production they have software and IC design, at the production back end they have packaging.

Wafer packaging and testing isn't that easy to adapt to for a former fabless company. There's definitely a learning curve and they are climbing it.

Recent posts here seem to endlessly revolve around SMIC's 7nm and SMEE's 28nm without reference to any concrete timelines or even substantial news. It's a bit disheartening.

As a bit of a morale booster I'd like to remind everyone of China's progress from 2015-2020.

In 2015, China's market share can be best described as pathetic. Even under the assembly, packaging & testing, the most labor-driven part of the supply chain, China could only take 12% of the global market.

In just 5 years, impressive improvements have been made along the entire semiconductor supply chain despite US sanctions. Most notably in wafer fabrication (SMIC) and chip design (HiSilicon). In AP&T, China now takes a commanding 38% of the market share. However equipment and EDA continue to lag. Overall, we still have a long way to go before realizing a fully indigenous semiconductor supply chain.

Industries as complex as chipmaking are inherently globalized endeavors. ASML and TSMC would be worthless if they could not import equipment from companies in the US, Japan, Germany, etc. China is special in that it is striving to do the entire thing herself. Even for a monster of a country like China that will take time. Be patient and trust in China, there is surely a long road ahead but progress thus far has been heartening. Jiayou Zhongguo!
I wonder what percentage india occupied in this entire semiconductor sector. I seen they're bragging about their semiconductor designing capability.

India focusing on designing semiconductors is a lot smarter than spending billions to subsidize a fab for a mature node (which won't do much for national self sufficiency if they get embargoed, and India's domestic semi manufacturing equipment capacity today is less than that of China in 2010 or even 2005).
