CRRC officially debuted CR-450 in Beijing. This is the latest model of the CR series HSR train with the max speed of 450 km/h and operating speed of 400 km/h.

China Railway will start pilot testing the CR-450 in the coming days. Commercial operation will likely start in the new HSR line between Chengdu and Chingqing. Since the CR-450 project began, this is the first railway line in China designed to run trains as fast as 400 km/h. The busiest line between Beijing and Shanghai, in comparison, has the max speed of 380 km/h.

I would argue that CRRC Qingdao Sifang's CR450AF is the most aerodynamically beautiful EMU ever designed. Looks like a complete departure from the predecessor CR400AF-AE. The CR450BF appears to be a elongated version of the CRRC Changchun's CR400BF-C series automated EMU.

Just wondering what are the economics of the CR450

Does the higher energy efficiency make up for the increased air resistance and track wear?

Are the tracks easily upgradable to accommodate the higher speeds?

How does the acceleration and deceleration compare to maglevs or older trains?

According to this article from January, it's supposed to reduce the Beijing Shanghai travel time to 2.5 hours, how is that possible?

If these aspects are favourable, could it be possible that China gives up on or slows down adoption of maglev?

It is resistence of full trainset being reduced by 22%. It is not necessarily the same thing as energy efficiency improved by 22% although the two are related. We don't know if that 22% reduction of resistence is constant over the whole speed range up to 450km/h. We should also remember that resistence increases nonlinearly with speed increase. But we should expect there is reduction even at the top speed. So overall there should be benifit to cover the increased speed. I don't see how wear increases together with top speed, wear only increases if the acceleration and deceleration increases (harder startup and break), not with cruise speed.

Are the tracks easily upgradable to accommodate the higher speeds?
Track itself is not the problem, it is the curve of the track and the bridge being the constraint. If they are constructed for a certain top speed turn, then speed at that section is limited.

China has not decided on maglev yet, not on national level. However, I don't think there is reason to give up on the tech. If there is a stretch where there is no HSR, why not build a maglev especially if that stretch connects major regional hubs where passenger switching is a must.
