Chinese purchase of Su-35

I think, even in the past, China don't buy specific technologies. What they tend to do is to buy whole platforms based on their needs, then reverse engineer the technologies contained and then apply them to other projects.

So therefore it is unlikely for China to buy a whole new Su-35 platform just for the engines, if the engine is the only area they want. And Su-35 will not really fill any specific needs that are not filled by the Shenyang J series.

That was in the past, when China's own technology base is pretty low to almost zero (sometime around the 1940s. That is why they needed to import fighters and warships from Russia (Soviet Union) to aid them in building a more modern military quickly because, seriously they still face deadly threats from outside.

Now (from 2000 onwards), China had a solid technology base, their operational needs are different. They could develop basically anything they need without the needs of importing. Although I would still refrain myself from saying that they are self reliance on all aspect. Obviously China still lagged behind in certain aspect, such as the engine department... however, unlike in the 40s... China is not in the impending threats of being attacked by outside forces and they have the resources and the time to develope their own platforms and sub-components.

Translating Wolfs graphic we have reached a impasse. The pro sale party points to the political process and perceived superiority of Russian engines. The anti points out that the Chinese are rapidly approaching the technology level of Russian engines and that the Chinese have produced the capacity to build there own flankers.

Associate Professor of National Defense University and PLA Air Force Premium Pilot, Colonel Wu, indicated one reason of why China wants to buy Su-35: over-the-shoulder dogfight capability. Because rear-view radar, Helmet Mount Sight, and off-bore-sight missiles are equipped, Su-35 has advantages in over-the-shoulder dogfight.

Has any announcement from the Chinese official been finally been made to purchase the Su-35? Read the link and it seemed like this Colonel Wu had mentioned that the Chinese had already bought the Su-35 (unless I misunderstand what was written). if the Chinese official and Russian official had not made any official announcement... I would just treat the news as either a total BS, or just what some colonel think it should be done.

Everyone has opinions, whether it's "US wouldn't trade LA for Taipei", or on Okinawan independence.

Granted, it's a legitimate opinion, but I believe the PL-10 already has off bore sight capability.

Same news but from different source . Bold part is particularly interesting :

China has decided to purchase Su-35 fighter from Russia because it is able to launch rearward-firing missiles, according to senior colonel Wu Guohui, an associate professor at Beijing's National Defense University.

The Russia-designed R-73M2, R-74ME missiles, US-designed by AIM-9X and the China-designed PL-10 all have the capability of being launched against enemy aircraft from the back of the aircraft, according to the party-run People's Daily. The missile has a "nose cone" over the rocket engine and modified fins to prevent instability problems while briefly flying backwards after launch.

The birth of rearward-firing missiles has changed the concept of aerial warfare, according to Wu. In regular air-to-air combat, a fighter must shoot down its enemy from behind. With rearward-firing missiles and a a rearview display mounted on the helmet of the pilot, fighter pilots in the future can attack their target from the front.

China has no proper fighter yet capable of launching such a missile during actual combat. The Su-35 will be incorporated into the PLA Air Force to help pilots and the aviation industry get a feel for the new mode of combat. In the future, China will be able to make its own modifications from the Su-35 model.
