Just briefly opened as long as the discussion stays polite:

Given my constant critic altitude towards that reported deal "Berkut" from the Key-Forum replied ... and I rate him as one of the most reliable, serious and honest Russian posters there:

Although i understand your stance of "I believe it when i see it Deino" a contract is deffinetly happening and might get signed at MAKS. Apparently there is a delivery plan too;

On the future of the program Su-35S. Under the current contract for the Russian air force was left to make airplanes 0215-0220, 0301-0308 (0215 and 0216 at LIS [station before flight] at the moment.). They are all in the plan for this year. The next stage is the aircraft 0309-0320, 0401-0415. Some of them apparently will go to China. This week Moscow will host another round of talks with representatives of g/n 156". The contract is likely to be signed at MAKS, but the planned delivery schedule has already been developed; 4 in 2016 and 10 in 2017 and 2018 - a total of 24 units.

So, let's wait and see ...

Would surprise me a lot if China buys Su-35 aircraft. The only explenation for me at least would be that the Su-35 deal is part of a larger technolgy transfer.

yup.. either that or it's 'bundled' together with other military and or business transactions like food imports, energy rights etc then I can see it but if it's just straight out buying SU35s with no other deals attached it's most likely in the realm of fairy tales.

If China is buying the Su-35, and that is one heck of a massive "if", then it has got to be part of a more comprehensive military or economic deal, and most likely one which the Russians forced the Su-35 to be a part of. Having zero countries interested in the Su-35s probably pushed Moscow to take drastic measures at selling the thing.

I doubt a notional deal would be due to Chinese efforts to secure an 117S engine, since it was rumored that NPO Saturn approached the Chinese to sell the engine during the 2014 Zhuhai Air Show but was rejected.

With the prospective induction of the J-11D as well as other advanced Flanker derivatives (i.e. J-15S and J-16), it becomes increasingly apparent that their procurement strategy does not revolve around the prospect of future Su-35s. That being stated, a potential Su-35 import could serve as an adversary or research aircraft rather than a main workhorse, due to datalink and logistical issues.

Agreed, agreed, agreed ... on all arguments.

However - and that's the reason why I posted "Berkut's" post - he is quite a very reliable poster in regard to Russian insider news and it is the first truly new information on this more than strange story ... let's wait and see.

There was actually plenty of talk from reliable Chinese bbs posters claiming that this deal was in the works a couple of years ago. So I have always attached this as possibility. I think the talk must have reached a pretty advanced stage. My main concern was always that the quantity of fighters that they wanted did not make a lot of sense to me and neither did the time line. But I agree that we should keep this topic on the low until we get more confirmed reports on this. There have just been too many false positives.

I agree. At this point I sort of wish that China will buy the darn planes just so that Russian media can still stop nagging us with Su-35 purchase news every month.

The longer this has gone on the more it seems the nature of the deal is about greasing the politics than it is about technological or capability based needs.
