I would say can it shot an airplane?
Star Wars style? I'm happy enough if it could take down a missile or even a drone to start with!

just a little update here:I don't think even the laser weapon currently in service on USS Ponce has that capability.

so I'm curious what will happen to this LaWS contraption now:
USS Ponce, Last of the Austin-class Amphibious warships, Decommissions
I don't think even the laser weapon currently in service on USS Ponce has that capability.
I'm glad that people with such mindset aren't considered good enough for higher positions in serious organisations because we would be still throwing rocks or shooting arrows to get something to eat...Yup That is why I said all this talk about laser weapon is hogwash They have been researching it for more than 30 years and spend billion of dollars, sofar nothing ever materialized
LOL my favorite military-lasers quote is thisYup That is why I said all this talk about laser weapon is hogwash They have been researching it for more than 30 years and spend billion of dollars, sofar nothing ever materialized
Laser skeptics sometimes note that laser proponents over the years have made numerous predictions about when lasers might enter service with DOD, and that these predictions repeatedly have not come to pass. Viewing this record of unfulfilled predictions, skeptics might argue that “lasers are X years in the future—and always will be.”
Not as much "hogwash" as 2 very large problems to counter.Yup That is why I said all this talk about laser weapon is hogwash They have been researching it for more than 30 years and spend billion of dollars, sofar nothing ever materialized
here comes a laser challenge:... But progress is being made there.
Not as much "hogwash" as 2 very large problems to counter.
1) Focal point time on target
2) Energy generation and storage and everything associated with it.
Problem 1 is an issue because in order for a laser to be effective you need keep the spot its heating (the only way it works) on the target until its successful. On a slow, thin, less maneuverable drone or against boats or ships this is not as hard a problem as it is if the target is an aircraft or high speed missile. Even with drones as the target, we are talking a second or more of focal time on the exact same spot. However getting the point they have with being able to take out drones is progress.
Problem 2 helps solve problem 1 but is its own unique issue. Finding a light, high capacity and (hopefully) rechargeable fuel source is the real holy grail to solve the laser weapon problem. While their is a lot of progress on battery capacity in labs, that's not yet made its way to tangible products yet. And they are anything but light. But progress is being made there.
