Metal storm seems like a bit of a gimmick to me. I mean how many militaries are actually even thinking about fielding them?

The best thing they can do is probably adapt it into some kind of active protection suit for armored vehicles.

I get that impression too. Wasting too much bullet I feel.
Don't see the difference between hitting a guy ten times versus completely disintegrating him.

All valid points I also feel there are very limited battlefield applications. Except for the use in air defense using metal storm to lay down a more solid wall of steel to intercept incoming munitions.

I still like the idea of an armoured gunship mowing down your enemies on the battle field.

Su-25/A-10 cross bred with a turret gun and massive ordinance capability. a true modern day Stukas/il-2 sturmovik.
these things are not only good for counter insurgencies and anti-armour in high intensity conflict.

most of modern day LPHs are the size of a WW2 light carrier. some big ones like Wasp class has the deck of essex class.

chopers are notoriously fragil and has less range and staying power than conventional air.

so Why not have a squardon of modern day Sturmovik stationed on these LPHs. low speed handling charactersitics of these things would prob mean they don;t need a big deck to take off and land. and they would have enough firepower and protection to mow down any opposition on the beach heads and deal with anyone but a proper naval aviation.

also in land armies these things can be organic to an army or division structure same as attack choppers are today. they can perform scout, recon, elint, attack duties of chopers but with much more persistence and staying power.

Truth be told, those who could field dedicated ground support aircraft were those who have the capabilities to achieve air dominance, but that's not the case for China, and op top of that, PLA have a wide selection of indirect fire support - alas not as rapid-response or accurate as air support could be.

pretty soon PLAAF can achieve air superiority over a battle field against some likely opponents in a likely conflict, if not already today.

in the future that's a definte goal.

with out air cover most arty assets would not survive anyways.

Basically that is a really bold statement to make. Just note that likely adversaries of China in that area would comprise of many advance nations such as Japan, South Korea, India and most likely Taiwan. Note that three of these nations would have the US as backing. So to actually achieve air superiority is not that simple or possible. But to go deeper into this issue would become a nation vs nation scenario that would be a no-no in this forum, so I would stop here.

China can maintain airspace superiority over it's own territory without issue, no matter the opponent.

The likely aerial battlefields would be korea/taiwan/japan/india and beyond.
