The key phrase has to be "Self Declared Exclusive Economic Zone", which suggests that the waters are not recognised as Korean by other nations.
Under those circumstances it is easy to see how a hard pressed fisherman could snap when he is boarded, his catch confiscated, his boar seized and himself fined. It could well have represented his financial ruin.

Of course it would be wrong to point the finger at just South Korea over this as it seems that all the East Asian nations are guilty of this kind of activity. All the more reason to sort out the maritime border disputes sooner rather than later as this kind of incident is more likely to escalate rather than decline.

Its also true that this story would have been unlikely to have made the international press had it not been a Chinese skipper.

to date, chinese government remain passive, this amount to admission that the fisherman was guilty.

This amounts to nothing of the kind. The Chinese government were not on that boat, how could they know or admit anything? Is it your case that whenever a Chinese national is arrested anywhere the Chinese government should jump up and down and immediately and vociferously claim that said national is innocent?

Anyway, I hear that even in Korea a suspect is not immediately presumed guilty.

There was no camera or government official on board genius? The Chinese government doesn't know what happened because the crew's been detained?

Right, I still find it hard to believe though, the fisherman was fishing right on top of Baengnyeong Island?!?!?!
You can't be serious.

Not my map, 'my' seriousness has nothing to do with it, I was pointing out your mistake re: location of the island.

Possibly the map maker may believe that the incident happened around the island in question and simply pointed to said island rather than some random point around same. I don't know what he was thinking and where he got his information..

I don't know about the accuracy of the map, but the fact that illegal fishing happens all the time, everywhere, should be an indication of how relatively unlikely one is to get caught. The sea is a big place.

Not sure if this incident is related because I haven't seen anything except one unofficial mention that the protest where this shooter apparently came from was over this incident. If so, not surprised.

Shots fired at Chinese consulate in LA

Shots were fired at the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles, but no one was injured, police said, adding that an Asian suspect was being sought.

The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported that the shooting occurred after a scuffle between protesters outside the building and a security guard, but police could not confirm this.

Police were hunting for a suspect described as an Asian man either in his late 50s or early 60s with white hair, said a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) spokesman.

"Apparently this man shot numerous rounds into a building. Officers are searching for the man right now. There is no evidence that he's in custody yet," the spokesman told AFP.

"No one was hurt" in the shooting at the Chinese diplomatic building, which is between downtown LA and Hollywood, he added.

The LA Times reported that a protester fired shots at a security guard outside the consulate, missing his target and hitting a building in the compound instead.

It cited early reports indicating that a group of protesters had gathered outside the building, and one of them got into a dispute with a security guard, who allegedly had taken a sign from the man and tossed in the trash.

The protester got into a vehicle and fired several shots in the direction of the security guard, all of which missed, the newspaper reported.

The consulate did not immediately respond to a request for information about the incident.
